In "The Paradise Syndrome," the Enterprise is seen moving backwards on impulse-power.
Clearly that's not A-R drive, or else it could only move forward.

Okay. I don't really recall the Enterprise moving backwards on full impulse in "The Paradise Syndrome". I do recall them fleeing ahead of it on impulse power, and the ship was not facing towards it, in fact away from it. Perhaps your mixing this episode up with "The immunity Syndrome" with Enterprise moving backwards out of the Space Amoeba. In either case, no one mentions subspace anything with regards to the impulse engines.
