Warp Speeds

Post by Picard » Tue Dec 06, 2011 11:39 am

Is this comment true:
maybe :) I know seven of nine said the ship cannot exceed warp 5 but after they erased the Garenor homeworld they were able to reach voyager 20 light years away in a minute or two. It took voyager 3 weeks to travel that far in the episode. (from youtube)

Also, is it possible to determine locations of "warp highways" to call them such?

I'm a little more than confused here. Who did what and where here?

Ship that guy who wrote comment is talking about is Annorax's timeline-modifying ship.

I'm really confused here, Picard. I don't know of any change in Voyager's warp speed in the "Year of Hell" episodes beyond the 5 year reduction from the trip home via the navigational data improvement seen in the opening teaser of part 1. When I typed in "twenty light years" into the VOY transcripts I got this:

TUVOK: Captain, the Krenim warship is in pursuit, but their weapons are not powered.

JANEWAY: They don't know what to do with us now that we're shielded against their torpedoes.

KIM: Captain, there's some kind of spatial distortion heading toward us. Sensor readings are erratic. I can't identify the phenomenon.

CHAKOTAY: What's the source?

KIM: Unknown, but it originated approximately twenty light years from our position. It looks like a shock wave in the fabric of space-time.

JANEWAY: Tom, get us out of here.

PARIS: We'll never outrun it, Captain.

JANEWAY: Maybe our new shields will help. All hands, brace for impact!

TUVOK: You were correct, Captain. The temporal shielding has protected us. The wave front has passed.

KIM: Captain.

Or are you refering to this?:

JANEWAY: The Krenim Imperium. Over two hundred star systems, nine hundred planets, thousands of warp-capable vessels, and now, after the shock wave everything seems to have changed. Run a new scan.

SEVEN: Spatial grid zero zero five.

JANEWAY: Same space, different configuration, exactly as Chakotay said. The Imperium appears to have been reduced to a few planets, and a smattering of vessels. It appears that someone, or something has altered history. But why weren't we affected?

SEVEN: Perhaps we were protected from the changes by our temporal shielding.

JANEWAY: So the question remains. What caused that shock wave in the first place? See if you can track it back to its origin.

SEVEN: The shockwave emanated from a planet twenty light-years away. The Garenor homeworld.

JANEWAY: The Garenor? We passed their planet three weeks ago.

Or did you mean this?:

SEVEN: I've scanned their propulsion system. Their vessel's mass prevents them from exceeding warp six. We can escape.

TUVOK: Captain, I must remind you our structural integrity is still impaired. If we go to warp now, the damage to Voyager will be extreme.

KIM: What about Tom and Chakotay?

JANEWAY: We'll have to come back for them. All hands clear the outer sections and prepare for wide-scale breaches. Tuvok, activate the transverse bulkheads.

Near as I can tell, Voyager passes a world 3 weeks prior, that world gets erased from history, the shockwave catches Voyager very quickly over 20 light years distance, but doesn't harm it, however the Krenim are reduced to nearly nothing as a result of the temporal shielding. Annorax comes chasing after the Federation ship and reaches it in a matter of minutes at most, but it cannot go faster than warp six. Voyager being heavily damaged, risks further damage by exceeding a safe warp speed.

Yes, I was talking about speed of Krenim timeship, not Voyager's. It would be few million c.

Voyager has a lot of inconsistancies though. I recall one episode, I don't remember the name, but it was stated that ships at warp can't turn.

"When at warp, no left or right.", or something to that effect, was the quote of day. However, it is only first thing they learn at Academy, not last one. However, events clearly contradict it, so...

That was in the god awful episode "Fury". Just about every single TOS, TNG, DS9, and every other episode of VOY itself contradicts it. Though even the dialog gives itself a sort of out:

JANEWAY: Excuse me, Doctor. Tom, what's the first thing they teach you about manoeuvring at warp?

PARIS: Faster than light, no left or right. When possible, maintain a linear trajectory. Course corrections could fracture the hull.

So it's not impossible at warp, as some people has claimed, just not desirable.
