Not really, well I wasn't very serious about the use of time travel, but it is possible.

The UFP has spies in the Romulan Empire for example.

From a psychiatric profile they can easily create a simumtion of a person as seen in many holodeck sims.

It makes sense we are seeing the past in Star Trek episodes.

It still doesn't make sense to think we are seeing the live version of the Captains's logs or mission reports though...

Maybe it's my allergies acting up, but your post isn't making sense to me. Could you rephrase it please?

I don't see where you are getting the idea that I'm suggesting a live anything? I'm saying what we are seeing, is all in the reader/writer's head, or it is a cheap representation of events on a computer hence why visuals don't mesh with dialogue.

If you have a better idea that does not involve out of universe thing I would like to read it.

Lucky, you first asked if what we are seeing in the show is what the Captain posted in his logs.
I said it could not be, simply because we, the viewers, are shown things that the Captain or anybody else on his crew could not possibly know, so they could not enter these events in their logs or reports.

What we are seeing in the shows is simply what happens, at the moment it happens, and we are viewing it on some kind of magical "God-Cam"...

I created this thread in hopes of try to find a reasonable explanation as to why Star Trek visuals make no sense.

That does not explain why ships change size, are consistently shown to be what we are told is dangerously close, and such.

Some questions are better left unanswered, lest ye be the subject of splitting headaches... :)

Well, if ST ships truly go at close to relavistic speeds, full impulse being 0.25c as the TNG Tehc manual says, then what we see are perhaps the relativistic effects of those speeds at work... ;)

Good luck. Finding any in-universe explanation is problematic at best. As you well know, the real reason the visuals look the way that they do is because the people making the show are under budget and time constraints, and are trying to find whatever they think will entertain the audiance. Unfortunately they don't always get it right.

Well what if the seeming contradictions between dialog and visuals are caused by the shield, propulsion, and EMC technologies? They all should distort space/time, but don't in any obvious seeming way.

Why not?

I see a problem in trying to over-analyze anything, and moreso in trying to find in-universe explanations for everything.
Sometimes, there are simply no in-universe explanations, else we start dabbling in ridiculous, unprovable theories that make no sense.
I like to attribute the size-changing ships to the fact I was tired when looking at the show, and leave it at that... ;)

Or do the sensible thing that most sci-fi technologists do, and try to average the numbers out for a ship or station as was done with the USS Defiant and Deep Space Nine.

To have fun discussions on hypothetical situations without being overly analytical...

I'm in it for the fun, not for the headache inducing ironing out of every small discrepency...

I leave that to folks like JMS and 2046... :)
