The Dodonna quote put to rest... ;)

Post by Praeothmin » Wed Apr 13, 2011 1:52 pm

I was reading the DS's entry on SW.com, and found this interesting tidbit of information (emphasis mine):
The Death Star was a battle station the size of a small moon. It had a formidable array of turbolasers and tractor beam projectors, giving it the firepower of greater than half the Imperial starfleet.
It seems that SFJ's interpretation of the quote is a lot more valid than the Warsie version, as there is no mention of the Superlaser in this sentence... :)

Of course, we already knew it, but it's fun to see the official SW site say it as well... :)

The problem with the OS is that it has often been a very weak source of information. At times it only pasted bits from some other guides, although I get the impression these days that they are, at least, trying to type their articles in such a way that even if they essentially say the same thing as the Essential Guides or even the old pages of WEG guides, it's spun so it look different.
Doesn't the OS say that the DSII is 900 km wide though? For ages, it's been giving erroneous information about Executor's length, and even made some mistakes on the Lambda shuttle or the AT-AT.
Now, since there doesn't seem to be any particular error on that bit, I guess it's a light weight but valid support of the defense grid interpretation, instead of the superlaser one.
It's a shorter rewording of what the novel "Death Star" established.

The Dodonna quote was easily "put to rest" by reading the ANH novelization, where it is very clear the good general is speaking of turbolaser batteries on the surface, not the superlaser.

Yes, but for those of us who only read illustrated books, it was still not clear... ;-)

I keep forgetting about the ANH quotation. For some reason it doesn't stick in mind. Perhaps it's not so straight forward?
What Prahtoenmind is saying is that what he likes about illustrations is that there's little text and plenty of colours.
So I guess... next time... quote the damn thing with big letters and use the colour palette on the right. ;)
Nah.
