The problem is that the Y-wings which made the first run didn't even get to fire any of their proton torpedoes before being shot down. So we have no idea whether or not Gold Leader and his wing would have been able to pull it off. Luke also lucked out incredibly by having Han and Chewie show up in the Falcon just in the nick of time to save his butt, thus clearing the way for him to make a clean shot, Force or not at the target shaft opening.

Ah, the infamous Deux Ex Machina.
Use the Farce, Luke! Use the Farce!

Really?
That pilot had his targetting computer locking on to that pipe, with not doing any evasive maneuvers but flying his craft in s straight line to maximize his efficiency, that pilot "came close", but he didn't succeed.
I'm 100% confident that if he had a 2nd or 3rd shot he'd have made it. There is always luck to account for, good and bad.
It took a kid, under fire, flying without the assistance of his badly damaged astromech droid, without his targetting computer but strong in the Force, to succeed...
;-)
Yeah, he got lucky there.
Doesn't change the fact the other dude got close enough for it to be doable by a 'mere' human.
Besides, we have
seen Luke shooting at small sized moving objects before (and after) and it's not as if Mr. Strong-in-the-force had so much better accuracy than the rest of the pilots doing the same thing.
Only thing he really seemed to luck out on where 'not getting killed' and 'making that one shot'.

So, recap of all the arguments:
It is doable, although extremelly hard, but in the end, the only one who did it was the one strong in the Force and with a lot of luck...
Yeah, I'd say I would have felt threatened in the DS were I Tarkin... :)

There's also the fact that it required the enemy having the plans of the station, and the enemy managing to get a missile into the shaft, at a time no one thought
fighters would be sent against the Death Star.

Indeed fighters were not counted on: in a battle against any 'normal' enemy (like a Trade federation) we would have fighters attacking the shaft run, after run, after run. Do you think 1000th shot would also miss?

Counted on or not, it's an incredibly boneheaded weakness, which even a rookie space engineer should have caught in the plan check phase of design, let alone construction.
Not that the Rebels are great geniuses either...
Hey Leia...if you suspsect that the Falcon is being tracked, why did you go directly to the main rebel base, instead of going somewhere ELSE, rendezvousing with another rebel ship in deep space, transferring the plans, then having the Falcon fly off somewhere else to lead Tarkin on a wild goose chase?
