Force Unleashed
Right, so I recently went out Christmas shopping and decided to pick up Force Unleashed for myself as I did. People had been saying it was a good game, and since I already read the novel, I thought I might as well give it a try.
One thing I didn't know however was that the thing had an extensive databank system describing characters, technologies and vehicles. You need to unlock stuff to get to read about them, but so far I've found quite a few interesting things.
Remember that age old debate about deflector domes? Well, those are deflector shield domes. R4 units are capable of 10,000 operations per second and so on and so forth.
So I decided to create this thread so I can dump all the interesting bits here, as I unlock more databank entries.

Another quickie. Imperial I-class ISDs have a solar ionization reactor that sets them apart from Victory-class ISDs and other earlier stuff. It's said to be far more powerful then anything that came before, actually. "Esentially a tiny sun".
Nah. It's there. Had to say it cracked a smile when I read it.Who is like God arbour wrote:That's a joke, isn't is?

My graphics card, which is too weak to play Neverwinter Nights 2 or Fallout 3 is 1,664 MHZ.
Dear God, by that indication, modern day Earth could screw over the Empire simply by sending them porn adds.=p

Well, a word to the wise - you can't go straight from MHz to megaflops. And that said, what constitutes a "flop" (floating point operation per second).
It doesn't say what kind of operations it can do 10,000 of per second. Our usual standard is floating point operations, but it doesn't have to be a floating point (32 bit) standard, and "operation" is a pretty broad term - you don't have to be using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as your benchmarks.
We already know that Star Wars refers to trinary code, in fact, so as an in-universe description, we can be pretty sure that regular old 32-bit "float" precision numbers aren't what's being used as a benchmark. It could well be 81-tit (equivalent to 128-bit) numbers; the benchmark operation could even be something rather more complex.
Besides, R2-D2 can render a blue-tinted fuzzy hologram (probably a maximum of 729x729x729 px with 9-tit color/shading, if the hardware mainly bases around its "natural" three-root) at ... what, maybe 20 fps? I suspect his graphics card can crunch more than 10 kiloflops. I think this is an example of someone not knowing what they're talking about.

That General Dodonna is referring to the Death Star's turbolaser emplacements rather than the superlaser has been referenced many times before here on SFJ, as well as other forums, the novelization, and this article on Robert Scott Anderson's site.

Not just any porn ads. The ones for the guy in the gorilla costume in the cage with the goat pen next door that's being taken care of by the dwarf holding a foot long hoagie in her mouth and milking a cow with her toes, while farting ping pong balls with Putin's face painted on them.Mith wrote:Wow, 10 KHZ?l33telboi wrote:Remember that age old debate about deflector domes? Actually, a CPU capable of 10,000 trinary operations per second is not something bad per se imho. I think it would allow access to more complex types of operations available once you can use three different values all at once. It could also allow to reach, more directly, other paths in logic beyond the limitations of Booleans. We don't even know what type of values are used. The third value, or more, could be very specific and more tuned to behavioral logic than what we use, like integers, for the calculus of something as raw as a polycount. It would be useful to help in emulation of human indecisiveness, a sort of foggy gray area between absolutes.
Without knowing the type of logic which is used, and the type of operations, that 10K number is virtually useless.
We don't even know the trit number associated to a R4's CPU(s) by the way.

Most appropriate use of Putin's face that I can think of.GStone wrote: Not just any porn ads. I know. The problem is that the movie and novelization left it vague enough so you could shoehorn in the assumption that they were talking about the superlaser. This doesn't leave any room for such an interpretation. As it just states that the cannon emplacements have a firepower greater then half the starfleet. It only then goes on to explain the superlaser in a different paragraph.Mike DiCenso wrote:That General Dodonna is referring to the Death Star's turbolaser emplacements rather than the superlaser has been referenced many times before here on SFJ, as well as other forums, the novelization, and this article on Robert Scott Anderson's site.

Sure. I can quote the whole thing too, if you really want. But it's a pain running back and forth between the TV set and the computer to get it all just right, so I'd rather not.
The bit about the superlaser comes first after this so there's a clear distinction.Databank wrote:The Death Star's exterior is lined with a formiddable array of turbolasers and tractor beam projectors, giving it firepower greater then half the imperial starfleet.
