I was looking through the basic part of the SFJ site and I saw the issue in regards to the Soliton Wave. Looking at the energy output for such a thing to destroy a planet, I suddenly remembered the issue with the small moon in Deja Q, in that they needed to encompass the entire moon or else it would crumble due to 'subspace compression'.

DATA: Yes, Captain. We are unable to encompass the entire moon.
PICARD [OC]: Do you recommend that we proceed?
Q: The two parts of the moon will have different inertial densities.
LAFORGE: Stand by, Captain. I can adjust the field symmetry to compensate.
Q: I doubt it.
LAFORGE: You don't know what this ship can do, Mister. Yes, Captain, I still believe it'll work. Increasing power and warp field and tractor beam.
Q: And if you're wrong, the moon will crumble due to subspace compression. Don't say I didn't warn you.
LAFORGE: Shut up, Q.

If the two technologies are more or less the same in regards to how they push a vessel through space, then the Soliton Wave should destroy the planet due to subspace compression, as opposed to something of a KE.

is it wrong that i just really love the part where laforge tells q to shut up?

If the two technologies are more or less the same in regards to how they push a vessel through space, then the Soliton Wave should destroy the planet due to subspace compression, as opposed to something of a KE.

Isn't subspace just the medium the force is traveling through like the force of a typical compression wave travels through matter?.

If it is subspace compression, no one ever says anything about it. On top of that, the soliton wave was stated to be gaining more energy at a constant rate:

DATA: Sir, the wave has increased in velocity to warp four point one.
RIKER: Doctor, we've located the soliton wave. It's still on a course for Lemma Two. However its velocity has increased to warp four point one.

JA'DAR [on monitor]: Have you checked the frequency resonance of the subspace

DATA: Sir, the energy level of the wave has increased by a factor of twelve. At this rate, it will have increased by a factor of two hundred by the time it reaches Lemma Two.

RIKER: Will they still be able to dissipate the wave?

JA'DAR [on monitor]: Commander, at that energy level, the wave will not only destroy the colony, it'll take most of the planet with it

So this isn't simply about some technobabble force that will crush or shear the planet, it's about power as well.

The force still exists be it subspace compression or KE. Either way, you must have that much energy to tear apart a planet. I'm simply looking at the means.

While i admit this is not positive evidence i think we can say it was not getting all that extra energy from just traveling through normal space.

Except that the soliton wave was gaining energy and getting faster over time. As I noted before, this is not simply some technobabble thing. The thing gained enough energy that not only could it not be dissipated by the the array at the colony station, but it would wipe out a good chunk of the planet as well.
