I was wondering if anybody had any info or theories that explain the disparities between the distances traveled in TOS that showed very high speeds, and the TNG/Voyager era speeds that seem considerably slower.

I seem to recall that TNG did have fast speed examples, and Voyager can be explained with their power shortage, wanting to preserve their engines (not knowing if they could repair them fully if they burned them out), etc...
DS9 had many, many high speed examples, as fast as TOS in many instances.

TOS "That which survives" gives around 765 000 c as at warp 8+ they can travel 990.7 ly in 11.337 hours...(heh 1337).

TOS : Bread and Circuses the Enterprise covers 1/16th Parsec in approximately 30 seconds = 215,000 x c.

TOS : The Squire of Gothos the Enterprise is 900 light years from Earth, so speeds need to be 10k c minimum.

In the 37's Paris stated that the top speed of Voyager was around 4 billion miles per second, which would be around 21,000 times the speed of light and under the circumstances was unlikely to be refering to a fuel limit ect top speed.

Even if he was down playing the emergency warp speed the disparity of roughly 36x as fast just seems too large.

We have some uber high examples of speed in TNG of up to almost 3,000,000x c but like the rest every top speed is contradicted by another.

Well, there are slow speeds in TOS as well, IIRC.
All ST series have very high and very slow speeds, what we need is to either explain them, or use an average... :)

DAMN that is a fine idea.

So what we really need is a thread called maybe "Warp travel" (catchy huh?) asking if anybody had any info or theories about it, a short but to the point first post should do it...

Implies that TOS speed average is much higher than TNG/VOY, which is not the same thing as checking for average speeds for all series, and then comparing them... :)

Yea i got a lot of the stuff i was referancing from those places, i suppose i should have just put the Voyager era as that is the most glaring measure of available speed due to it being a major plot theme of the entire series.

Well then, Voyager was a ship that went through hell, was low on power, needed to preserve its engines because they lacked Starfleet facilities to keep them in top shape, they constantly needed to replenish their energy reserves, and their Captain was an idiot...

You left out that they didn't know where all the dangerous interstellar phenomenon was. Just getting better maps helped them cut something like 15 years from their trip

Voyager was also not traveling at a constent speed.

Actually, the scene goes like this:

EARHART: How fast?

PARIS: Warp nine point nine. In your terms that's about four billion miles a second.


However, Paris cannot be talking about top speed for the ship since we already know from "Caretaker" and "Relativity", that the top cruising speed is warp 9.975. But at any rate, most of this issues have been hashed out before. In the Voyager and warp speed: Consistent? and TOS & TNG+ threads, among others.
