What Treknologies can you think of that would make thing appear to be in places they aren't, appear to change size, and things like that?

This is actually quite interesting since it essentially confirms that even regular shields can act as cloaking devices to relatively primitive sensors. Although I doubt it was intended, the TOS "Tomorrow is Yesterday", and "Future's End" are really a great case of tech continuity in Trek.
This also may explain why cloaking fields are referred to as "cloaking shields", and why in "The Enterprise Incident" Scotty had to hook up the device to the E-1701's deflector control:
SCOTT: But, sir, what about Mister Spock?
KIRK: We'll just have to hope he can buy us enough time to get this cloaking device installed.
SCOTT: It'll have to hook into our deflector shield control.
KIRK: Can you do it?
SCOTT: I don't know, sir.
KIRK: You have fifteen minutes, Scotty.
So it seems there's a lot we're missing when it comes to understanding the nature of Star Trek shields and their apparent cloaking device spin off.

There is also the example of the Enterprise-D sitting in orbit of a planet about to produce its first warp drive in First Contact, and there being a panic about an alien invasion on the ground do to Riker being taken to a hospital.Mike DiCenso wrote:

I've actually brought this up several times. You can't target Trek ships with the naked eye or EM sensors very well if at all.

Can you think of any other common treknology that would cause the inaccuracies we see in Star Trek visual effects?
