. . . that poor, poor little bastard. What kind of 1960's drugs did they give that kid to get a smile out of him, when he knew good and well what he was wearing?

I hope nobody subjected their children to such headgear. No doubt the "PULSING SONIC SOUND" and "FLASHING LIGHT EMITTER" served as dork alerts to the local populace.

At least Star Wars helmets are cool. Stormtroopers and Vader, oh my.

Those have a dork quotient, perhaps, but don't leak dork all over the rug like that thing. Egad.

Nerdiness comes in varying degrees and flavours. For instance, there's the general sort of unacceptable level of nerdism, and then there's the casual level of nerdism. The casual sort of nerd spends a bit of time doing nerdish things but more time devoted to life in general. The unacceptable nerd is the one who spends all of his or her time wearing a Starfleet uniform or Stormtrooper armour and has spent more time drooling over Natalie Portman or Ewan McGregor (varies depending on sexual preference of the nerd) than actually attempting to go out and get laid. That type is the one that this wee helmet falls into.

There's also a third level of nerdism, closer to the casual nerd, but with no actual time for much of a life because of important commitments like holding down a job or working towards gaining an education and focusing on getting that out of the way. After which they may in fact go and do something nerdy because it's easier to neglect a nerdy hobby than it is to neglect a serious relationship. This is called a busy nerd. There are other types, like the lazy nerd, but I can't be bothered to go into them.

Who the hell made that.. that..awful thing in the first place?

I can already see Trek fans trying to find the awesomeness in that thing if it had been canon. :D

It was a prototype for wiring jaws shut that failed, so they turned it into a toy to salvage the idea.
