I haven't read them all although they are cool links, but some of them reek off of sheer sensationalism.
Like the "Gravity powered aircraft flies with no fuel". The trick of very little density inside a large uplifting volume has been known since the Montgolfier brothers. The issue always was to get the less amount of matter within an enveloppe which itself weighed very little.
Vacuum and ultra light components were a most logical and obvious conclusion to all of this.
This is just as shitty as calling a trebuchet a gravity cannon btw.

This one is puzzling: "University of Washington fusion reactor promises "cheaper than coal" energy"
Fusion power is the pink unicorn at the present stage. ITER is a pipe dream that won't come true. Now they say the new system is ten times simpler but outputs more power?
Has their experiment worked or not? They largely speculate, because it's said that IF calculations prove correct... dream dream dream. Notice that if it had worked for real, there would be no need to promise anything because the tech would now be a given, it would be there, period, and only waiting to be scaled, rather easily.

Here we go with another one... "Stanford researchers control light using synthetic magnetism". As a simple rule of thumb, light and magnetism don't really work well together. You get light as a result of an EM phenomenon. This article, falling for the same sensationalist sin, also muddies waters by jumping from electrons to photons at will while also completely shifting what would be goal posts from magnetic fields to solid media such as the property-dialable crystal.

Thankfully, not all articles derive from the same click-bait template.

Well you're certainly being a grouchy Mr.Grouchy Pants in a light heart thread that is more about inspiration then reality.

I really find it annoying when I read or see rail or coil guns in Scifi, but somehow they don't have L.A.S.E.R. weapons. It's like the authors do no research, and so I decided to start a thread on tech that sounds like something that is based on the real world and inspires.

You really need to lighten up in a thread that is going to have a lot of speculative things in it. Just google dynomak if you want to know more about it.

Fusion at least looks like it will work on paper, and building the designs is at times the only way to test them.

A few days after the Gizmag Dynomak article was published, Lockheed Martin stated they are working on their own fusion reactor design:

Some of the stuff is apparently already to market.

Was reading some average "x things that will do [whatever] to [whatever]", with a bent on tech.
Page 3 or so, talking about collecting CO2 and releasing energy instead, with a trick through biomass.
http://decarboni.se/insights/5-technolo ... _source=ob
Bio-energy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS)

BECCS is a technology that produces negative emissions. That means that it actually removes CO2 from the atmosphere while making energy instead of creating pollution. The way it works is that trees and crops are grown for use in generating power. These crops, through their growth, remove CO2 from the atmosphere and incorporate the carbon into plant biomass. The harvested plants are then used for fuel. If the plants are just combusted, that results in a "net 0" CO2 level, the CO2 captured in the plants would leave the generator as exhaust -- but if carbon capture technologies are used to trap the CO2 on combustion, that's when the negative emissions are achieved. As a final step, the CO2 is then stored geologically, deep in the earth's crust.

BECCS has been called out (PDF link) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as a "key technology" to help the world meet it's climate change targets. Decarboni.se has a lot of information on bio-energy with CCS which you can find here. (full disclosure: Decarboni.se is backed by the Global CCS Institute)
The fucktards call that negative emission.
You get energy through controlled emission of CO2, down to the point it's sufficiently controlled as not to return the compounds to the atmosphere apparently (they'll just stick it in filters and bury them), and for some reason, a bunch of geniuses have decided to call that a negative emission???

Yes I get it, there's a reduction of CO2 in total, so you get a minus. Hence it's a negative sum, somehow.
I guess simply calling it a cleaner emission or, perhaps equally valid although less elegant, a CO2-reduced emission, wasn't good? Or just reduced emission. Huh, that surely seemed too simple and sounded like they were attempting selling your usual automobile exhaust pipe of the week I suppose.
Why not go for, perhaps, a depleted emission, or a lighter emission? I don't know. But a negative emission for something decidedly positive is ridiculous and reminds of all those conventions taken by scientists over the centuries that are counter intuitive.
It's just that the terms are antinomic.
Is the tech about releasing negative energy or particles? Nope. Not even close.
It's not even releasing magitech freezing particles that will suck energy out of the environment. As stupid as it sounds, that would have certainly warranted the still stretched label "negative emission" and would have caused much less brain wrecking convoluted gymnastics. It would have sounded Star Trekish, aptly, because there it would (we think) make sense. Fiction wise, that is.
Like it or not, the emission is a plus, it's also a gain, an addition to the domain that's on the receiving end. You have energy that's produced and some bits of CO2 that won't get caught. Stuff is sent, given, dumped, whatever.
The only thing negative is the way of thoughts of the peeps who conjured that silly term.

Yeah... sounds like a new paper system for accountants to play with Renewable Energy Certificates or emissions trading. Star Trek engineers are more fun than economists, so a new magic technology it is! Besides, everyone knows that crops don't remove CO2 unless you actually plant them yourself, implemented with solar powered bio-tech filtration systems, otherwise they don't count!

It's a little old, but I thought I'd throw this on the pile. Wonderfully impractical sounding, the whole thing just makes me chuckle. Yo Neo, was that a near miss or a spaz attack?

Who's the loon who's going to test this suit?
I remember a sequence in one of the Iron Man flicks...

Now when you think of the amount of gears and servos needed to have this suit to work properly, and all of this hardware eating at the room alloted to armour, wound't it be perhaps better to make the thing simpler and just tack more armour, and use rather "dumb" gas-piston movement amplifiers to help soldiers deal with the extra weight?

The context of its use is very specific, i.e., a situation wherein you can actually shine like a beacon in the light (the emission of waves to scan the environment for incoming supersonic bullets) and where it won't dramatically increase the risks of drawing fire by being detected.

Honestly, a stealth suit sounds much smarter than some complicated system that "screams" in all directions and listens to the echo.
