The Republic encounters the Federation with a twist...

Post by Enterprise E » Wed Jan 30, 2008 4:05 pm

Let's say that a wormhole at the edge of Federation space links the two galaxies. The Federation and the Old Republic and the Jedi Order, circa just before the Clone Wars, encounter the Federation circa 2380 or so. The twist is that Force users have recently been discovered within the UFP, and theories indicate that there may be force users in the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire as well. Now there are only a small hand full of Force users, about half a dozen confirmed in the UFP, all human/humanoid, all eighteen years of age or younger (the oldest is eighteen, and the youngest is eight). The only major difference between them and the Jedi is that the Milky Way Force users don't have midichlorians. Also, Milky Way Force users are more specialized, i.e. a user is strong with Force Lightning and is an energy manipulator, but can't use mind tricks, another is great at physical enhancement and/or Telekinesis, but can't use many other Force abilities. Many don't have Force visions. They are also proportionally stronger, in raw power potential in the use of their strength, than SW Jedi/Sith due to the Force gene not being watered down due to lack of marriage between Force users.

Let's say that the Federation and the Old Republic develop good diplomatic with each other, with the Klingons and Romulans following suit after a while. How would the Jedi in the SW galaxy respond to finding Force users in the Federation and other major powers? Would they try to take the Force users from their families? If so, would they Federation Force users agree to go? If they refuse and the Jedi try to exert pressure to get them to go, would the Federation try to stop it? What would happen while training? Would those with energy projection/lightning affinities chafe under the rules of the Jedi? Would they go Dark, Gray, Potentium, just leave and learn on their own, etc.?

What do you think would happen in this scenerio?

It's hard to say, really. I think that's why nobody has answered yet.

Based on the fact that Tatooine was not part of the Republic, and that not all Jedi are recruited from within the Republic, it seems likely that roving Jedi, encountering Force sensitives in the Federation, would try to take them back for training lest they fall to the dark side.

However, the Federation has no tradition of turning to Jedi for wisdom and arbitration, as the Star Wars galaxy does, and would look unkindly on Jedi with no repect for their laws running around the place.

On the gripping hand, however, we've seen both telekinetics and telepaths and their treatment by the Federation. Telepaths of one variety or another are fine. The physically affective powers Starfleet has reason to mistrust; see Gary Mitchell in "Where No Man Has Gone Before;" even the enhanced children of "Unnatural Selection" prove problematic. Energy manipulators may be particularly problematic.

I can picture less ethical segments of Starfleet, such as Section 31, covertly approving of Jedi abducting Force sensitives; however, the main arm of Starfleet and the Federation seem tolerant. The Ocampa, for example, are treated with quite positively by Janeway.

Personally I don't think the Federation would care for someone, even an ally going around and kidnapping and or trying to entice away any of it's citizens, in particular those with such obvious strong telekinetic-like and pre-cog abilities.

A possible compromise could be reached, if the Republic is open enough about what the Force is and that there are those gifted with it in the Federation. For example, I could see where the Federation might allow Jedi advisors to help with the setting up of a domestic Jedi Order.
