Starfighters: In depth in the EU and the movies
As my most recent Starwars.com blog post might suggest, as well as my recent posts on Startrek.com, I've been looking closely at Rebel starfighters.
I've started to even look closely at what the EU tells us about starfighters. Now, I'm only one person, with one pair of eyes and limited time on my hands, so consider this an all-call for anything and everything about starfighters.

I thought I heard that for the A-Wing. Anybody know the precise source? I can try to see if it's in the EG, but I might miss something, and if it isn't, I'd like to know where else to look.

I cant even remember which comic book, one of the trade paperbacks for the x-wing series it was probably 'phantom affair'. I am pretty shure they simply copied the information from the first edition of the essential guide for vehicles and vessles, which means the new guides should also have the same information.

It's funny that I was talking about the P-38 earlier. Apparently Lucas paid a rather direct homage to the ol' P-38 Lightning.

An interesting curiousity: Proximity effects of proton torpedos - or lack thereof.
As we know, near-proximity proton torpedo detonations - launched by attacking craft at near point-blank - don't hurt fightercraft, as in TPM, ANH, and ROTJ. Even in enclosed spaces, such as the TF battleship or DS2 core, ranges of a few hundred meters cause no collateral damage.
In the EU, a near-miss with a proton torpedo or concussion missile is quite survivable. Although we have exploding flak bolts which buffet small craft in every single movie, torpedos are not used for proximity effects.
We should note, briefly, that a 10 square meter cross-section at 90 meters would get hit by ~1/10,000th the energy of the explosion. At 9 meters, you get hit with 1% of the blast.
So, if a torpedo is more than 100 times the strength of a given laser bolt, it should give a nasty hit at proximity.

I think the torps used by the N-1s were, at best, slightly upped anti-fighter torps. In fact, I'd say that would apply to most of them, considering the relatively similar levels of destruction we've seen.
Funnily, the explosions due to N-1 torpedoes weren't the same against the coreship's hull and inside the hangar.
Either the generators sucked up the energy, or the N-1 torpedoes could be dialed up or down (non precharged?).
