Klingons and Tactics

In the past, I've heard a lot of complaints about Klingons and their tactics or lack thereof, but rarely if ever have I heard specific examples brought up.

So ... let's look at the actual examples and try and put together a good picture: What happens with Klingons, and is it really any different qualitatively than what we see from everybody else in Star Wars or Star Trek?

I think the stand out example of bad klingon tactics that most people refer to is the "Way of the Warrier" boarding action of DS9. Half of them use disrupters and the other half use bladed weapons and they all get their collective asses handed to them, especially in ops.

There is also the issue of their honor code, which has two major flaws. First, the ultimate objective of every Klingon warrior is to die in battle in order to assure one's place in Stovakor (spelling?). Second, it discourages the using technology to gain an advantage over your opponents. Instead it favors using brute strength and skill to defeat enemies.

To be fair, Klingons have been known to use some clever tactics during war time. An example of this would be in Way of the Warrior when the Defiant comes across some damaged Cardassian ships that could possibly have survivors on them, but Worf recommends not to help since there are most likely Klingon ships cloaked in the area waiting.

As Worf put it, 'There is nothing more honorable than victory' or something like that.

It isn't that they don't use good tactics. It's that like pretty much all scifi factions, they don't consistantly use good tactics.

We can pretty much give it a name, like the Cannon Fodder Effect, or the Stormtrooper Effect, or whatever. Bad guys who start out good often end up as crap in the face of the heros. They mysteriously get much when fighting with the good guys though.

Is that really all we have here? A variation on the infamous Stormtrooper Effect?

I think so, outside of some cituations involving hand-to-hand amongst themselves at play and with others in war.

It would be hard to argue something other than the Stormtrooper effect. They were one of the most fearsome enemies in TOS and to a lesser extent TNG.

Not unless you're going up against the likes of Worf, Kor, Kang, and Koloth. :-)

From My vie w, klingon tactics in DS9 are adequate. Why do you think they are dumb there?
