This is pure bullshit...
The OT did nothing more than re-hash unoriginal storylines in a flashy, space opera way, but it was still full of plot holes, and wasn't perfect, or even near it...
I for one am sure I'll like the new movie...
Man, chill.
First of all, nobody here has established a hierarchy of what was better versus what stank. Nobody has judged the unreleased movie either... well, you almost did. Which brings me to the second point.
Your stance is quite absurd right now. Your shrillish and fanboyish attitude towards a movie that hasn't been released yet (but I can understand) couldn't even begin to exist or make sense if the original material had not been of superior quality, regardless of your current claims.
Nobody said it was perfect either. But my point stands.
For Trek, JJA could allow recycling the designs and tweaking them because he was filming for a known era. In other words, the Enterprise just had to be recognizable yet different. Say, very different.
But for the teaser, what we see is such a reminder of the worst EU moments and designs.
The plot could be good, it's hard to know at the current time, but there's a tingling sense of microwaved material here. I mean, I can understand a little variation in design of armour and else after 30 years, that would be expected. Some would even say that it would have evolved even more. Hard to tell without knowing the status of the galaxy, of this neo-imperial faction or who's at the top of it.
But things such as the white panelled TIE fighters... that's really cheap. It doesn't even make sense, nor looks good. Same goes with the Sith lightsabre (aka let's try to cram more blades for sheer coolness). There are many bladed weapons which are cool, but not all of them would be nice once translated to a lightsabre form.
Plus, oddly enough, although I usually like the setting, Tatooine is really becoming old hat. Again, reminds me of the worst EU trends where everything would have to happen on that damned sand ball of Tat.
Overall, I'm very weary of the fan service. It feels lazy and I wouldn't have minded the designs to be much more different, with even a new evil faction. In fact, with so many imperial hulks, it would have been a good indication that things had shifted a lot after the fall of the Empire and the massive vacuum created in its wake.
They even manage to make the ROTS-ANH change of designs wider and bolder than the jump from ROTJ to TFA.
It would have been cooler to actually have loyal imperial troops being short on resources and having dumped the most petulant aspects of the Empire to stick to some pragmatic gears, now that Palps has fallen down a big blue shaft.
You'd get the Imperialists using more dirty tricks instead of parading in the open in white shiny armour like if they were still pwning three quarters of a galaxy, one hand tied in the back.
And if they really want to put an even less subtle spin on the fascism/tyranny message, perhaps one day they could also try the red and yellow colour pattern for a change? Because the Nazi imagery is really getting old, it's a cheap card and even has been ridiculed to length with zombies, dinosaurs, UFOs and beam weapons.
Now, if you want to be original and still scare kids, last time I heard, all communist regimes combined really produced their lot of terror, destruction, torture and murder all around the world (to say nothing of wiffing a nice and warm nuclear war by a breathe). There's enough matter to pick from, and it stretched on an even greater period of time.
Really, originality is not what comes to mind with those two teasers. And it has even less reasons to do so with the dude at the helm of this project.
The advantage is that from such a vantage point, there can only be good surprises, right? :)
