Everything Known About Nadion Particles

DATA: Energy flow is within normal parameters, from the pre-fire chamber to the emission aperture.

LAFORGE: Rapid nadion pulse, right on target. Beam control assembly, safety interlock, both checked out. Beam width intensity controls also responding correctly.

DATA: Energy cell usage remains constant at one point oh five megajoules per second. Curious. The efficiency reading on the discharge crystal is well above Starfleet specifications.

LAFORGE: Yeah, by quite a bit. Ninety four point one percent efficiency.

DATA: Our most efficient discharge crystal typically fires with eighty six point five percent efficiency.

LAFORGE: Let's take a closer look at the wave pattern on the emission beam. That might tell us why it's losing so little energy.

DATA: Pulse frequency out of pre-fire chamber reads steady.

LAFORGE: There. That's not right. The initial output spike is inverted.

DATA: That might suggest that the weapon has been charged with a forced pulse, well into the terahertz range.

LAFORGE: Then it's definitely not Starfleet issue and there can't be that many systems that use the terahertz feeds.

DATA: Three hundred twenty seven, to our knowledge. We can probably achieve an exact match with a random computer search. It will take approximately three hours.

LAFORGE: I think we could narrow this down with a little common sense, Data. Who has the most to gain from a conflict between the Klingon Empire and the Federation?
Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges wrote: BASHIR: Two things. First, Sloan has too much information on the inner workings of their government, too many insights into their political process. Second, Sloan's plan is to kill Koval while making it appear to be an accelerated case of Tuvan Syndrome. Now the only way to do that would be to expose Koval to a short burst of nadion radiation. The simplest plan would be to manoeuvre him near a phaser relay and surreptitiously irradiate him. Now since I doubt very much that Sloan is going to have a chance to do that, it stands to reason someone else is going to have to.
Extreme Measures wrote: ODO: How long do I have?

BASHIR: I can't be sure.

ODO: You can make an educated guess.

BASHIR: I could, but first I'd like to talk about slowing down the progress of the disease with a series of nadion bursts.

ODO: I want a time frame, Doctor.

BASHIR: A week. Maybe two with the nadion therapy.

ODO: Thank you. Now I want to see Kira.
Nothing Human wrote: TABOR: I can still remember the sounds his instruments made. The screams of his patients. The smell of chemicals and dead flesh. He operated on my grandfather Exposed his internal organs to nadion radiation. It took six days for him to die. I promised myself I would never forget.
Time and Again wrote: JANEWAY: What time is it?

TERLA: Four oh one rotations plus twenty one.

JANEWAY: We'll just wait until twenty three.

MAKULL: Twenty three? What's the importance of twenty three? Oh, this is all about the alleged time of our self-annihilation. All right, let's just see if we can all get through the next

(A wormhole starts to open up behind Janeway.)

TERLA: What's going on?

JANEWAY: They're cutting through subspace.

MAKULL: My god, it's going to intersect with the conduit wall!

JANEWAY: Our own rescue attempt. That's what sets it off! My weapon may be able to seal that hole. It's our only chance.

(Makull opens the bag and Janeway takes out a phaser. She fires it at the growing wormhole.)

[Ruined corridor]

TORRES: I'm getting nadion particle resistance from the other side.

KIM: Increasing generator to maximum output. The generator's overloading.

TORRES: I don't understand. It's not working. We're not penetrating the fracture.

(The wormhole is defeated by Janeway's phaser, blowing the away team backwards in slow motion. All the crewmembers disappear from the planet surface.)
Demon wrote: TUVOK: Even if thrusters are repaired, they won't be of much use if we sink any deeper.

JANEWAY: There must be some way to disperse it. Try a nadion burst from the phaser emitters. It may weaken the electromagnetic properties of the fluid.

TUVOK: Aye, Captain.

JANEWAY: I'm on my way to sickbay to check on Harry and Tom. You've got the Bridge.
wrote: JANEWAY: Report!

KIM: The nebula's beginning to destabilise.

JANEWAY: Cause.

KIM: I'm not sure. It could have something to do with the nadion emissions being produced by the Bussard collectors.

[Cargo Bay two]

ICHEB: You're not remembering correctly.

NEELIX: I beg your pardon?

ICHEB: The Bussard collectors don't produce nadion emissions.

NEELIX: Well, the technical details don't matter. What's important is that Voyager's presence was destabilising the nebula

_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

NEELIX: It took almost two days for the crew to return to the ship. Eventually, an artificial environment was created in an isolated section of deck twelve. The creature's been living there ever since.

MEZOTI: I told you there was a monster on deck twelve.

ICHEB: Haven't you been listening? It's not a monster, it's an alien life form. What was that?

MEZOTI: Maybe it's the alien life form coming to get us.

NEELIX: Haven't you learned anything about letting your imagination get the best of you? (power is restored) There. That little jolt was probably nothing more than our friend leaving the ship to go to a new home that the Captain found for her. Time to regenerate.

REBI: What if the life form didn't leave?.

AZAN: What if it wants revenge?

NEELIX: What if I told you I made up the whole thing?

MEZOTI: Naomi told me you always exaggerate.

ICHEB: I knew the story wasn't true, the moment you said the Bussard collectors produced nadion emissions.

NEELIX: I should have known better than to try fooling the four of you. All right, in you go. Pleasant dreams.
I find it most interesting that Nadions mess with the electromagnetic properties of an object.

Good catch on that. Might explain the stunning effect on lower settings. But I don't know what vaporization would be in the context, though we could ponder disintegrating based on disruption of intermolecular bonds. But that would, ideally, leave the mass present in the form of distinct atoms and molecules.

Put another way, if that was all that was going on it would leave a helluva mess. And there might be other odd effects, like phasering water and releasing hydrogen and oxygen which then makes a good fire. A neat effect, mind you, but still.

I was more interested in a pattern I started to notice as to what causes trouble for Federation Shields.

I'm fairly certain phasers leave the mass of the object they hit.

DATA: The satellite's trajectory is continuing to deteriorate, Captain. This orbit will put it within five hundred kilometres of the planet surface.

GARIN [on viewscreen]: We're predicting the atmospheric drag will bring it down on the next orbit.

SCIENTIST [on viewscreen]: Have you been able to find any explanation for this?

DATA: No, Doctor. It is a most unusual phenomenon.

PICARD: Won't the moon disintegrate prior to impact?

SCIENTIST [on viewscreen]: No, it has a ferrous crystalline structure and it will be able to withstand tidal forces, Captain

RIKER: Could we blow it into pieces?

DATA: The total mass of the moon would remain the same, Commander, and the impact of thousands of fragments would spread destruction over an even wider area.

That always seemed a torpedo-related inquiry, to me.

THey don't say what weapons would be used, and I see no reason to only use torpedos.

By saying "blow it to pieces" Riker was implying the use of explosions, presumably provided by photon torpedoes, to blast the asteroid to rubble. Data then commented that the remaining rubble would still devastate the civilization below. The use of torpedoes is not required by the statement, however, it is implied.

Phasers often making things explode coupled with the informal nature of the statement leaves the weapons Riker was thinking of uncertain.

Photon Torpedos use ion radiation to damage things after all.

It could go either or both ways, since we know that phasers and photon torpedoes have variously been selected to destroy or split asunder asteroids and comets in nearly all the series.

The only strong implication for the use only of photon torpedoes in this case comes from a similar scenario in the later TNG episode "The Pegasus" in which Riker wants to use most of the E-D torpedoes to destroy the large asteroid with the titular ship inside it to prevent it's capture by the Romulans and with the ulterior motive of preventing Admiral Pressman from getting his hands on the phase cloak.

One problem with that example is that Riker wasn't thinking clearly. He was starting to panic, and because of that we can't be sure his plan would have worked, or would have been the best choice.
