Can he pull it off? Or is this destined for the trash heap? It's one thing to frak up a TNG movie like Nemesis but if they screw up an icon like Spock or Kirk it'll destroy the franchise forever.

Except that I love what J.J. Abrams did with Lost and MI: III, so I'm pretty certain the results will be excellent...

I've never seen any of Abrams work so I can't comment. But what's giving me some hope is that B&B aren't involved and Lenard Nimoy has signed on and he jumped ship on Generations because he thought it was subpar (or so I've heard), so hopefully he thinks this is a quality script.

Yeah, I too am hopefully for a quality film considering who all is involved. You know, even if something doesn't mesh well with continuity, I still tend to be somewhat forgiving if the product itself is well done and entertaining.

Not only that, but this movie is in many ways a "last chance" for the franchise for the foreseeable future. If they mess this up, it'll be a real shame.

I'm actually hoping for a complete continuity reboot. I think fitting the story into the existing framework will be too challenging. And to be honest, I don't want to see anyone but the original cast fitted in within the original stories anyway.

I agree. I think they're taking a big chance as it is making this movie now rather than waiting ten or twenty years.

Oh, I completely agree. If they want a reboot, as far as I'm concerned they should go for it. Better that than when they intend for it to be in continuity and totally miss the mark. That's when it starts to get on my nerves.

No kidding. Just a while ago everyone was talking about how the franchise needed a breather, and I agreed. Launching a new movie in 2008 is not quite what I had in mind as far as a breather goes.

Nimoy has, IMO, a pretty good handle on what makes good Trek, and has worked most sides of the business - actor, director, producer, and writer. By and large, I like his work.

His involvement makes me feel better about the movie.

From teh screaming and gnashing of teeth over at the Star Trek forums, you'd think the end of the world was nigh. So many people are calling this the "death of the franchise".

You know I'm drawing a blank as to who else should play Spock. They should probably do what they did in the original case and cast a relative unknown so as to not colour anyone with preconceptions. I've never seen this guy act so I have no opinion beyond: can he pull it off? But I'd wonder that of any actor. Nimoy is a big set of shoes to fill.

Trek Movie

It was long rumored, and has since been confirmed, that the new Star Trek film will recast the Original Series characters Kirk and Spock (with Spock already cast with Zachary Quinto). TrekMovie.reported last October that the film will also have McCoy and Scotty and now (if a new report is to be believed) it appears we will get the whole gang. AICN claims to have obtained a partial character casting sheet for the new Star Trek film which includes Kirk, Scotty, McCoy, Uhura and Sulu (but no Chekov who didn’t join until the second season). Details below:

[JAMES KIRK] 23-29 Handsome, cocky self assured and earnest. Great physical condition. 6 ft or less

[LEONARD (BONES) MCCOY] -28-32 Medic on the Enterprise. Smart, clever and a bit danger-loving. Dark hair, blue eyes.

[UHURA] 25ish -African American. Brilliant, beautiful, heroic and FUN!, Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in a house full of brothers.

[SULU] 25-32 -Asian American male (preferably Japanese). Helmsman on the Enterprise. Extremely fit, capable and dedicated. A bit of a wildcat.

[MONTGOMERY(SCOTTY) SCOTT] -28-32 a brilliant ship’s engineer. Must be able to do a flawless Scottish accent!

Although TrekMovie.com cannot confirm the AICN report at this time, it is consistent with reports we have made in the past. As noted above we have already reported that McCoy and Scotty were in the film, so what is really new is the addition of Sulu and Uhura. In his TrekMovie.com interview earlier this week, the new Spock, Zachary Quinto, stated the film was about the ‘convergence of all these characters.’ Quinto clarified that he meant more than just Kirk and Spock. The casting sheet and Quinto’s comments along with the report about the film featuring the USS Enterprise makes the TrekMovie.com report (from a year ago) that the film is about the first mission of Kirk’s Five Year Mission on the USS Enterprise seem more and more likely. TrekMovie.com has also reported that the characters of George Kirk (Jim Kirk’s brother and Chris Pike (the captain before Kirk will be featured, but these have yet to be confirmed.
So it looks like the entire original cast will be, well.... recast. And that it will be the first mission of the five year mission of the Enterprise. Must be a reboot because I don't think Bones was on the Big E during the attempt to cross the galactic barrier.

This conflicts with Bounty on SDN reporting that Quinto recently let it slip that they're thinking of having Anton Yelchin play Chekov, which might reinforce the notion that this is a reboot.

Info might be incomplete, or they've dropped the Chekov option.

Technically(as far as I know) they never said Bones was NOT there. They jsut never said he was either.

That's the typical kinda mistake people make when they insist Enterprise had a million contradictions or rewrites. Enterprise never really contradicted much(if anything), and what few contradictions were made can be easily chalked up to the fog of time and improper record keeping in the following CENTURIES.

Well, I don't want to argue about that, so lets just say I disagree about your opinion about Enterprise :)

I think that ultimately all boils down to coolness factor. If the characters don't act like bunch of idiots, if they are believable, then even if plot isn't, it should be fine. I've witnessed that on Stargate SG-1 :)
