Found these videos, and thought they could be interesting to discuss:

Drachinifel normally does naval history, so it is interesting seeing him talk about Star Trek ships.

Finally got to listen to the first part. I enjoyed it. The paradigm talk was good (i.e. identifying the parallel period in our oceanic eras). I hate all the noncanon ships but, under the circumstances, understand their desire to pad the fleets, especially since there are so few alien classes compared to the UFP.

I don't fully concur with some of the placements and comments but overall it was an interesting set of thoughts. I also enjoyed the channel's defense of the UFP fighter.

I've been working slowly to balance Bridge Commander ships so I get what they're going for. I did it via use of the Starship Volumetrics data and some fudging for playability, but the moral of the story here is that photon torpedoes are the great equalizer (to an extent) when it comes to Star Trek combat, which they didn't seem to talk about in Part 1.

What I mean is that, much as PT boats could provide coastal defense by bearing capital-ship-killing weapons, even a 2280 Miranda can have delightful firepower in 2370 so long as she carries 2370 torpedoes. That's different than the circa 1900 ideas in the video . . . back then folks didn't tend to swap out guns, so if you were built with a 12 inch gun that's likely what the ship had the whole time. Phasers still work that way ("that's a lot of firepower for an Excelsior Class ship!"), but by all appearances most photon torpedo types should be interchangeable.

Quantum torpedoes are another matter. I don't think they're interchangeable.
