Fed cap ships and pivoting

For those naysayers that refuse to believe that the capital ships of the Federation can't make 90 degree pivots at sublight, like the Falcon could, I finally found the video evidence on youtube from the DS9 pilot. The quality isn't great, but you can still see it happening. It's 22 seconds long. Focus on time index 14-18 seconds and on the Fed ship in the background when we see 2 lone cap ships.

Yeah, I've had that on my Overview page for quite awhile:

"Further, Federation starships could run circles around their Imperial counterparts. At Wolf 359 (as depicted in "Emissary"[DS9]) we see two of the largest ship classes, Ambassador and Nebula, flying in tandem. They both execute remarkably quick and tight 120-degree turns. It's good stuff.

But I wouldn't think that's really a pivot. It's a tight-ass turn, but I would've thought a pivot would've been a turn where the point around which the maneuver occurs is within the volume of the ship (or at least the volume of the ship if she were a box of equal length, width, and height).

Well, if you want tight turns, look no farther then "Encounter at Farpoint", where the E-D did a 180 degree turn within two spans of its length, if I remember correctly.
And, in TNG, in season 6, I seem to remember a 180 degree pivot by the E-D, alas it's been a few months since I last watched season 6, so I couldn't tell you which episode (you'll need to watch season 6... :) )

There is a tight, rapid 180 degree hard about done by the E-D in "The Defector" towards the end of the episode, but the ship is blocked by two Romulan warbirds before she can jump to warp.

I'd forgotten that one . . . it was a wierd maneuver in a way, sort of a sliding 180, like a car going backwards on snow at 35mph and pivoting the nose around.

There's also the other 180, a slower one, that was used at least in "The Nth Degree"[TNG4] with the newer model. It plays sheer hell with any notion of the E-D center of gravity, though, 'cause the pivot point is way in the back of the ship somewhere, maybe 20 meters in front and somewhere above the aft torpedo launcher.

The E-D also did a 180 degree turn by pivoting on its z axis during â€œTime Squaredâ€ and also the maneuver to fit though the closing doors of the Dyson sphere on â€œRelicsâ€. Seriously, the whole â€œFederations ships cannot maneuver/had poor maneuverabilityâ€ is just another unfounded claim by our pro-Wars/anti-Trek friends out there to try and attack one of the advantages that Starfleet and Trek in general has over their franchise of choice. Itâ€™s painfully clear that Federation ships like the Galaxy class cannot maneuver quite like fighters but for 4.5 millions tons capital ships their maneuverability is excellent.
