So 30 years ago, a movie called "Star Wars" hit it big. In pop culture terms, in other words, Star Wars is 30. I'd like you to pause and reflect a moment what was going on in 1977... music, politics, and everyday life as well as the movie theater.

The Apple II, the first widely marketed personal computer, was launched in 1977. Disco was at its peak; so was the Cold War. Brezhnev had just reached the pinnacle of his popularity within the USSR; the United States had recently elected Jimmy Carter following the ouster of Nixon. The Americans had just withdrawn from Vietnam (1975) and the Soviets would shortly go into Afghanistan (1979).

Life was quite different then.

You know, of all the things about the first showings of Star Wars where I live, I never once encountered the lines-around-the-block phenomena that people often claim to have experianced in 1977.

User Friendly weighs in on the 30th anniversary.

I've tried to avoid long lines. Something about them bothers me.
