Star Wars Fighters

I'm starting this thread as a place to discuss the purpose of SW fighter craft in combat against other SW ships and also as a place to discuss their capabilities.
Role: Fill the space between those fat whales exchanging fire, often called warships, so the film will look nice.
And of course, give the chance for the heroes to get some screentime, seen piloting something, since they couldn't actually control a capital ship or shake around on deck 2267-B of an imperial battle station before people get bored to death.
