Geodie's visor and elements in real life

Okay, different elements are gonna give off different EM properties because of different atomic structures. Picking up on different combinations of elements would show different EM interaction results in different parts of the scanned object, but I'm wondering about the difference between the elements. As you go up in the periodic table, would the difference be a linear progression as you go to the next one because of adding one more electron and proton to the nucleus or is it more of a nonlinear change that follows the idea of 'the end result is greater than the sum of its parts' type of thing and the differences that you would get between each section of the periodic table is an exponential change?
