Limits to Borg adaptation

Post by Mr. Oragahn » Sun Sep 30, 2007 8:23 pm

There are many things to say on that, but above all, I'm wondering if the Borg adaptation ability wasn't largely due to the fact that they had a whole huge nexus of brain power to crunch numbers.

How far could a Borg adapt if it was completely severed from the whatever all Borg are part of?

With Seven disconnected, her nanobots did help make One's tech after being fused with the mobile emitter. In the end, though, I think once a drone is severed from the collective, the only new info it can draw on is what the drone itself gets on its own. If they regain the consciousness they had before, there's the chance of new inspiration. If they don't, they're gonna be the way they are with the only new info what they come across.

Any adaptation comes from a combination of several elements.

- Sciences databanks.
- Former adaptations which could be related to what they want to achieve.
- Observation of the system you want to adapt to.
- Understanding of this system.
- Creation of a parade.
- Eventually, a global agreement I suppose.
- Implementation.

All this requires a given amount of data and computation power.
All those major adaptations the Borg went through happened as they were linked together, to use the whole's power towards singular and identified goals.

Without being linked to the Collective, I think the ability to adapt will be critically hampered.

More precisely?

Her nanobots had the info to make the variations of the tech and the instructions for the tech itself for One. She isn't hooked up to the collective and her nanobots even made a maturation chamber and grew a person. When she freaked out and started growing her implants back in, she immediately adapted to the phaser fire before her shield went up to protect her.

I don't get the reference. Can I get a more detailed explanation, something to look at a memory alpha or else?

Reading a thread at SB.com, I've spotted one member outlining a problem regarding cracking a tech which belonged to a race which had been assimilated countless times, in the film ST 8.
Something about the Borg failing.

The Raven

[Bridge]

JANEWAY: Report.
TUVOK: I've received an alert from Security. Seven of Nine attacked Neelix in the Mess Hall and three other crewmen on deck two.
JANEWAY: Janeway to Seven of Nine. Seven, if you can hear me, respond.
CHAKOTAY: What's her location?
TUVOK: Deck six, section twenty eight alpha.
GAUMAN: Captain, what is happening here?
JANEWAY: I wish I knew, Chancellor. Chakotay, seal off deck six.

[Corridor]

BORG [OC]: Seven of Nine.

[Bridge]

CREWMAN [OC]: Security to the Bridge. We've just seen Seven of Nine. Her Borg shields are fully operational and they've adapted to our phasers.
JANEWAY: Acknowledged. Bridge to all security personnel. Configure your weapons to a rotating modulation, but keep them on stun.
GAUMAN: Borg. You have Borg on your ship.
JANEWAY: It's not what you think. She is a member of my crew. We liberated her from the Collective. She's no longer a Borg.
GAUMAN: Then why is she equipped with Borg shields?
JANEWAY: I don't know.
CHAKOTAY: She's able to cross through the security fields. She's entering the armoury on deck six.

And VOY: Drone.

That doesn't make any sense for First Contact. Can you provide a link?
