I haven't watched Doctor Who enough to pronounce myself on the writing, but as far as the acting is concerned, I really don't recall anything brilliant about it.
I've been witness to three different incarnations of the Doctor up to know, and I've yet to be impressed by the acting.
Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad at all, the older Doctors were even, IMO, pretty good.
But they, in no way, distinguished themselves from the acting in Star Trek.
The latest doctor is pretty good, though he does 'repeat' a lot of performances.

Some of the 'high drama' they presented, especially in season two of the new series was extremely effective with believable emotions from the entire cast, instead of the Startrek 'one in ten can act' problem.

That said I don't really agree with Narsil on the subtle bit. The doctor can be subtle, but more often than not they choose extremely grand sollutions to their problems. If they'd stop doing that the show would approach perfection though ;)
