I'm Back

Post by Sothis » Thu Apr 24, 2008 9:25 am

Ok, perhaps the wrong forum for this post, in which case can a mod move it please? I am however, after my long absence, back- and ready to resume discussions of this most wonderful topic.

My apologies for my absence- family life, work et al can take it's toll sometimes.

Good, maybe you can now continue your debate with Jedi Master Spock here.

After all, you have challenged him here.

And please consider the somments, we have made here.

Welcome back, Sothis. I know how important dealing with real life matters are, and I hope that you can get settled back in and find a thread with a subject that is of interest to you.

Heh, well, the topic is definitely more wonderful than some of the topics I've discussed in the past (terrorism, war etc). Though I suppose calling it wonderful is pushing it a bit...

As for my debate with JMS, given how long that's gone by, I think it would be better to move to another topic. Me and him do generally agree that Fed ships have an edge on agility and speed, with the main crux being how much of a difference in speed.

Admit it, ST versus SW is a wonderfully effective way to waste time :P

If only because of the total insanity of people calling (on all sides of the debate) weapons that 'only' reach a couple of megatons pathetically weak. It's only a couple of billion KG's of TNT ;)

And don't even get me started on the outright ridiculous notion that a state spread over 1000's of lightyears (or more) would still function properly with just a few people at the head of it (ok, it does make for nice viewing ;))!

(For reference: a 50 MT explosive would require 50 billion KG of TNT, or a rough 311x311x311 meters of the stuff. And real-world states, even with todays near-instant global communication network, get into trouble if they're bigger than say 1/10th of the globe. Many an 'empire' collapsed because of internal strife and powerplay after all)

I have to agree that some folks take all of this a little too seriously. But that extremism has already been examined in detail: some of it quite harmless yapping, while some is dangerously borderline pathologically sociopathic, psychotic, and downright criminal.

So I applaud Sothis for taking a break, and focusing on what is really important, and keeping the perspective that this is only supposed to be for fun.

We certainly have plenty of topics, though I don't know if comparing the acceleration and maneuverbility of a brand-new battlestation versus a decades old and damaged mining facility an appropriate comparison. Why not stick to comparing A Sovereign class starship's maneuverbility and acceleration versus that of an Imperial Star Destroyer?

Certainly the issue of starship construction is still on-going, and fresher perspective on things might be a nice change of pace.
