Spammers and sockpuppets

Post by Trinoya » Sat Mar 04, 2017 2:32 am

A not insignificant number of spammers have been attempting to post on the boards. These posts should have deleted with extreme prejudice. Also a sock puppet account was discovered and recently taken care of as well. If you notice or suspect any accounts of being spam or sock puppets do not hesitate to message me.

Your oppression level may now return to normal.

Yes, the problem is "In the dark" because those posts don't show up until they are approved by JMS or ourselves, so as a result no one sees just how big this is. It's unfortunately what takes a huge chunk of my time when I'm logged in here to clean this crap out of the approval queue. Naturally this means I have less time to participate in the various threads.

Is there a way to have spam-cleaners without full moderatorial power? I don't recall my phpBB-fu enough, but I feel certain this crowd would be up for a little crowd-sourcing of the problem if the usual spammer prevention mechanisms are failing woefully.

Also, I admit to being the sockpuppet of . . . wait, who would the funniest person be at the end of this sentence?

Naturally, it's the Russians.

Interestingly, though, it is still more comprehensible than JasonB.

Oh, and I was thinking of another member here. It's not a sock puppet if they aren't otherwise willing to show up, make up nonsense excuses and personal attacks to explain not doing so, et cetera.

Honestly the mass spammers aren't the real problem, the real issue is every so often a user sneaks through by making a post that looks legitimate.

...

Never making that mistake again. 0___0

On a side note: Larrynew snuck by from sheer volume (you zone out after hitting 'disapprove' so many times), my apologies to JMS/Mike on that one.
