Thread Necro

There's a concept in the world wherein one should not "necro" a thread . . . i.e. talk about the same thing in an existing thread.
Why is that? I mean, I suppose it makes some sense insofar as increasing apparent forum activity, but on a board about specific topics why have several threads covering the same territory?
To be sure, some threads could be too vast in scope for that to work properly, but if there was a specific thread about a warp speed as seen in a particular episode, it doesn't seem fitting to have three threads on it over three years.
Just pondering out loud, pay no mind.
