Good Lord. They're going to have to start paying you for this Praeothmin.

Didn't Universal Net Guru have a different IP though?

Ok, here's the thing:
On a mostly tranquil, barely moving website, where new posters are very rare, new posters started popping up everytime a known sock account from a rule breaker gets banned, and not only do they not present themselves, but they all use exact, identical arguments and writing styles, and always pop a day or two after the previous ban.
They jump right in conversations as if they had been there all along, automatically continuing the line of thought or argumentation as the previous sock-puppet accounts...

None of the these people who were banned have taken this up with JMS, as was KSW's SOP.
When I banned him, he whined it wasn't fair, but never once took it up to JMS as I suggested.
And not one of the banned socks have complained to JMS either, or if they did, I wasn't told by JMS.

Do you really believe we need IP addresses?
I use my nose now, and when it smells like KSW, it is... :)

If you guys feel it is unfair, I suggest you take it up with JMS, except I would remind you that these are sock accounts created by KSW in the express purpose of circumventing a ban he deserved for not following the rules, going so far as to use proxy addresses to continue evading the bans...

If JMS feels I am being unfair, so be it.
Until then, as soon as I sniff KSW around, he gets booted until his official ban has been lifted, period...

Didn't I sent you a PM about UNG?

My point was unclear. Sorry about that. I would have thought that, given how hellbent he is on circumventing moderation, he would be using every tool at his disposal to make his sockpuppetry less obvious. Or maybe he just made UNG from the library. I guess it's just an ad nauseam tactic now.

I think you're doing fine. Keep right on truckin'. :)

I suggest that the creation of sock puppets to circumvent bans shall extend said ban's period... considerably.

i suggest that it makes a lot more sense to simply make more than one account when you first sign up, just in case you ever get banned on your first account. make sure your other accounts comment on something every couple of months, that way, you ever get smacked off the board, you simply go to one of your other accounts that have already been accepted as real and slowly ramp up the number of posts that account makes. abracadabra! ban evaded!

UNG is the sound you make when you have a spontaneous, unexpected orgasm. i know this from experience.

People going up to the trouble of creating multiple accounts can't wait several weeks or even months before posting again. And that does not solve the style problem, not the resurrected topic hint.

It probably is a little premature to hit the ban-hammer before an account posts. We do occasionally have genuine new accounts register here on a monthly basis.

If you can manage to behave perfectly well on your other account, and never accidentally post on the wrong IP with the wrong account, you could indeed pull something like that off.

A sufficiently determined poster can and will evade a ban on any board. In order to strictly enforce controls on who posts, you have to implement some kind of fairly rigorous method of linking account registration to real identities. However, if escaping being re-banned means behaving differently (and being civil), our end goal is met.

We don't have board rules here for the purpose of maintaining some in-group status and making people feel like they're part of a selective club. Places like SDN have an overgrowth of rules for an assortment of reasons. We have board rules here for one very simple reason: To promote civility (OK, three reasons - explaining why we ban spambots, not getting into legal trouble because someone posted child pornography or something else illegal, and promoting civility, but for typical human users, the third reason is the only relevant one). If I didn't feel that a civil atmosphere was something that the VS debate desperately needed, we wouldn't have those rules.

Temporarily banning rude posters is something we do to help maintain a civil atmosphere. If rude posters become civil on alternate accounts in order to evade their bans, then all I can say is "mission accomplished."

this is the only board in the world that wouldn't instantly warn me for admitting to something like that. i love this place.

In that case, I will not ban the latest KSW sock puppet, in the (vain I'm sure) hope he finally understands and follows the rules of the board... :)

Aaaand it wasn't too long for KSW to go back to his old ways:
Wong can't dazzle with brilliance so he baffles with bullshit-- which only fools those who can't tell the difference (like YOU).
He said to SWST, in this thread...

So KSW sock puppet: 1 warning.
And since his KSW is still banned for a few months, letting him off with just a warning means he wins... :)

I missed that one, good catch. Actually, since this goes against what JMS was talking about above with a rude poster changing into a civil one, you'd be more than within your jurisdiction as a mod to outright ban this latest KSW sockpuppet.

Just make sure it's spelled out to KSW why he's going to continually get booted. M'kay? :-)

He can read, can he not?
This forum is viewable by eveyrone, logged in or not.
Which is why I posted my explanations here.
Every time I warn him, I tell him why and that he should know what is and what isn't accepted here.

If he still doesn't know why he's banned by now, he'll never know Mike...
