so what happens if a member of the board creates an obvious sockpuppet account and then uses it to commit bannable offenses against his original account, but is really polite to everyone else? and if these actions were to cause the original account to draw warnings for said offenses, what would happen if the member vehemently denied any connection to the obvious sockpuppet account, against all logic?

There's no concern about who is targeted by the insults. It's the act that's punished.
He'd be very stupid to flame himself (the other self that can't respond btw since it would be a former sockpuppet account).

We'd ban the sockpuppet account permanently, and tally warnings against the main account normally.
The goal of the rules is to keep the boards civil.
If a user does what you said, he is creating an unwanted situation on these boards, and as such, is contravening the board's rules...
