Exploding Consoles Of Doom Explained At Last

So Star Fleet may use insulators and surge protectors?

I wonder what this means when it comes to firepower, and power generation?

Remember the origin of the exploding consoles? Where No Man Has Gone Before had the first exploding console which looked a hell of a lot more like an electrical fire then what followed.

I've always presumed it was something similar to this, but that it also could be related to the plasma whatsits and the chip whojits.

But still: Yeah, good find.

Plus Federation uses plasma conduits instead of wires which handily explaines exploding consoles. Althought I have no idea why they would need such conduits in consoles instead of wires but still...

Actually, everytime we see a panel being opened, we see wires and circuits, so their Plasma conduits are used to ferry power all over the ship, but not directly in any instruments...

Wouldn't this mean that the power-surges are caused by weapons fire by design?

No. As you could have seen from my links, standard cables still can cause Consoles of Doom effect.

Indeed.
A direct hit, or even bleedthrough damage, may overload the power circuitry, which may in turn overload the surge protectors, which may cause the explosive panel...

It's because of the sheer amount of energy being transferred. For example while idle the USS Voyager had 5 billion gigajoules flowing through the ship. A wire would instantly turn into plasma with that amount of energy. It also is far more efficient for energy generation than the normal turbine methods.

It seems to be turned into electricity in the console with conduits going through it.
