I am a newb to the forum but not to sci fi debates... I came upon this place after an exhaustive experience in most Sci Fi related debates especially involving wars and trek and as such am glad to see this place seems to be a calm relatively passive place

hopefully I'll be able to be a productive member here and so far it looks like a cool place, see you around

Yeah, this place is pretty level-headed and civil.

BTW, Pro-Trek or Pro-Wars?

Not that it really matters, just curious.

i am a star wars fan and will be for ever...but in terms of Vs debates? very very much on the Trek side..of things believe it or not..have been for years..its a matter of evidence to me more then personal preference

I sorta had the bad experience of being on the front lines of a four year long SDN invasion..to convert "idiot comic fanboys..who know nothing about science" and it left me with a very bad taste in my mouth...after that i just..got kinda burned out..and turned off a little

Macross Junky too

Um, do you mind telling us what the story is behind that?

well it started about a year and a half before my time I got caught up in the last two and a half years of it but..from what I understand Wong objected to the empire being curbstomped by Galactus..and one comic book space fairing nation (one that spanned..thirty galaxies..and where advanced enough that even their junk freighters had shields that could withstand super novas..so its not an unreasonable loss here)

and started calling us..morons..who hated Science..then there was a thread where the Trade Federation fought the Borg and lost..and then SDN supposedly lost it..and just declared war on CBR....and then we ended up periodic invasions..with some really stupid long and insulting..threads that only ended when the mods made evidence rullings..and banned star wars as a topic for like eight months

it was..so petty..so..pointless that it turned me off of trying to mount even an objective defense of Star wars..and since I'm a fan of both series..it just left a bad taste in my mouth over all

Yeah, that sounds like Wong when things don't go his way. Do any links back to this still exist?

That's how SDN left me feeling as well. Believe it or not, before I stumbled onto that site, I was slightly Pro-Wars (I'd been flipping between Pro-Trek and Pro-Wars for some time, this was just a phase). After discovering it, Wong left such a bad taste in my mouth that I became Pro-Trek again, and have stayed so ever since. That was four years ago.

As for invasions, I thought they were illegal to discuss at SDN, ever since their attempts to invade TrekBBS and Troll Kingdom backfired, and 4chan handed their asses to them.

well allot of the threads got deleted..the mods where understandably furious but a couple gems from the begining of the war..do exist that I could probably find as long as its not against the rules..to post links or anything

Superman being killed by Darth Vader, x wings casually obliterating the Defiant..and the Thread that start it all..the Tf borg one still do exist

it's sad to see fans go..into crazy land, as a comic book/anime fan I've seen it..with the other mediums of fiction I'm into..and its always shocking..

but the "faux intellectual" attitude that site had during the invasions is what really was disturbing..

we kicked their asses pretty good too..or at least thats how i see on SB and SDN they probably think other wise...but these where..say..sudden mass invasions that lasted months..then died down due to defeats and bannings..then..resuming hostilities it was like...four separate forum wars spread out from 04-07- they really sort of took their time..

I didn't know they messed with 4chan thats just hilarious and also a good reason to stop forum wars lol...I know currently they had a mass invasion of..really really horrendous DBZ fanboys..I guess its Karmic justice

What? They truly tried all of them?

@Breetai
What's CBR btw? Could we have examples?

you guys wanna see the thread that kicked off the war?

http://forums.comicbookresources.com/sh ... hp?t=92411

http://forums.comicbookresources.com/sh ... hp?t=93301

these kinda kicked it into high gear

too bad they Deleted superman vs Darth Sidious and Darkseid vs the Galactic empire

theres another one that sort of marked the official end to the "war" where me and some other posters took on a pack of wongites and one of their mods that culminated in the mods making it a bannable offense to use the EU or to post fan calcs..for anything but it seems they canned it

enjoy

Interesting read. I'll have to go over the whole thing in detail when I have more time. But my first observation is how interesting it is that the Usual SDN Suspects, Darth Servo foremost among them, show up every time a debate like this this crops up. This almost exactly the same pattern we've seen with JMS' ST.com forum Versus debate several years ago, although in this more recent one, it is not one person being dog piled on, as happened with JMS.

A similar pattern seems to occur with the YouTube commentaries for a number of the ST vs SW videos, just look at Nowhereman's battle with two distinct pro-Wars people there. These Warsies seem geared up to join into any outside they come across, ready to do battle with anyone who dares to come to the conclusion that any ST power, even the Borg could defeat any SW one, in this case the relatively weak Trade Federation.

you should of seen the Shi'ar empire vs The Galactic Empire debate

you have the GE who even making use of the EU has what a twenty or so thousand ships and "teraton" fire power (note I doubt they have even MT level but what ever eu says so ) and relatively swift ftl

vs an Empire who spans twenty six Galaxies has WMD's that can sanitize an entire galaxy, consider the loss of ten million ships in an invasion of the Andromeda Galaxy to be "a minor loss of forces comprising the sixth fleet" and..employ a guy who can crack supermans neck..like a fat guy on a piece of KFC extra crispy

also their frigates have the fire power to mass scatter a planet..after firing through a star..on the other side of the solar system and their FTL is obscenely fast like "pop up any where fast"

and Wongs.. top henchmen show up..plus hordes of newbs who wanted respect to argue against these dudes and did like a massive eighty something page flame war

and i wasn't sure what bothered me more, the fact that these jokers who claim to seriously be "scientific minded" could possibly argue against such a massively powerful space nation who employs individual soldiers who can personally annihilate a star system inside of a few seconds deploy galaxy destroying superweapons...and have frigates who surpass any fire power calculations even curtis saxon tossed out

and Servos (i think it was him haven't reviewed the thread in ages) best counter was "Thor and The Silver surfur can bypass their shields pretty easy enough so I don't see why an ISD couldn't do it in a few shots" followed up by generous claims of how we're uneducated morons who don't know anything about science

the whole debate was so..sickening...and the more obviously futile it was to argue against such a space nation the more aggressive and crazy they got

now I have no clue if it was a wong ordered flame war or if the remainders of the horde decided to just have one last go at attack rumbles and did it just because..but it was really a monstrous waste of time

That's just.... bizarre, especially since the Shi'ar Empire is at least on par with Ian Banks' The Culture, which the Warsies pretty much admit is capable of wiping the floor with even ICS-level Star Wars ships.

Anyway, any further discussion of this should be brought over to the "Other Websites" section of the forum.
