Crimebusters vs Airstrip One

Post by sonofccn » Sat Aug 31, 2013 3:05 pm

Another silly, random little scrape which popped into my head. Hopefully it will be worth a giggle.

Exactly what it says on the tin I'm curious what effect, if any, the Crimebusters, minus Dr. Manhattan who's overpowered, from the Watchmenverse would have against 1984's Oceania and Big Brother. CrimeBusters are the 60's, and perhaps only, variant with their standard gear/costumes, arrive at airstrip one with complete and intricate knowledge of the novel 1984 and are actually inclined to work togather. At least as much as they ever did.

So do the most disfunctional group of superheroes since the Minutemen win the day for God, country and the excuse of wanton violence or will they be doubleplus crushed beneath Party's might?

Your scenario requires some liberties with the crapsack world of 1984 since Oceania was not simply the former United Kingdom, but also included all of North and South America and Australia as well. So if the Crimebusters are showing up, they're doing so from another reality completely, otherwise you have to assume that Oceania is reduced in scale ala the way that Alan Moore depicted it in his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novel series. Otherwise there is nowhere for the Crimebusters to come from.

I suppose we can assume that Dr. Manhattan found a way to open a rift between the two worlds, and he cannot be involved with the Crimebuster's exploration of the 1984 world because he's too busy maintaining the connection. The other liberty is that the Crimebusters actually stayed together, unlike in the canon of the Watchmen graphic novel where the group fell apart after only one meeting in the early 1960s.

With that in mind, presumably Ozymandias and Captain Metropolis will be handling the tactical and strategic planning for the group. They will possibly make use of Nite Owl II's airship Archie's stealth abilities to drop someone like the Comedian into the Proletarian sectors of London or thereabouts to reconnoiter to determine if their information on Airstrip One is correct. Silk Spectre II may also wind up going on this mission, but likely she will have to do so in civilian clothing. Rorschach is another good possibility since he has demonstrated superb street smart skills and atheletic ability that allows him to move around on rooftops and other places where surveillance is likely to be minimal. Since this is pre insanity Rorschach, he may, when out of sight of his fellow vigilantes, take off his mask and mingle with the regular populace.

The big danger the group faces is when moving to the areas controlled by the Outer Party Members as Thought Police surveillance will be much higher than the Proletariat sections, and they will probably be in great danger of be noticed since they have noticeably higher physiques than the average undernourished Outer Party person. Psychologically they will stand out because they have not lived under the oppressive Ingsoc regime or it's doctrines. Traveling about in the Inner Party areas will only be worse. While members of the Crimebusters, like Nite Owl II has considerable firepower with Owlship Archie, and he has a plethora of gadgets, but getting into a fight against an extremely well-organized, high numbers, and highly fanatical group like the Thought Police could well see the Crimebusters killed or captured. Those caught will, of course, be sent to MinLove for interrogation and possible reprogramming.

So, if the Crimebuster's group is to do well at all, they must do their utmost to keep a very low profile. And without Dr. Manhattan, any quick success against Ingsoc will be unlikely.

A far better match up would be V from "V for Vendetta", who has plenty of experience in taking down a similar totalitarian society and in England, no less.
