Clean and cheap power sources Earth could build

Post by Lucky » Sun May 27, 2012 5:45 am

I'm try to create a list of power sources 20th/21st century Earth could build in theory. Please feel free to add your own examples because I've only been able to think of two.

Giant Robo: The Animation
Shizuma Drive

Draw Back:
Will kill everything on the planet that needs air to survive do to a flaw in the design that no one inexplicably noticed, but the flaw is corrected at the end of the series.

They have large glass cylinders as a major structural component.

Life Span:
Unknown, but likely months to years

Output:
Unknown
They come in different sizes, and seem to power everything.

Marvel Universe 199999
Arc Reactor
Draw Back:
The palladium core needs to be replaced every so often do to neutron damage, but if you use the element Badassium as the core the problem seems to be solved.

Badassium is likely difficult and expensive to produce, and may not exist in nature. If Badassium is the same thing as Vibranium then it is still extremely rare.

Life Span:
The Arc Reactor Tony made in a cave was stated to have a life time of 50 human lifetimes to run an electromagnet that was originally powered by a 12 volt car battery, or 15 if it was to power something "really big". All later incarnations seem to have longer lifespans.

Tony Stark has built two very large Arc Reacts to power his factories and offices in California, and Stark Tower in New York City. The life span of these reactors is not known.

It appears that the palladium core is what gives an Arc Reactor its limited lifespan, and that there may be way to prolong the life of the reactor aside from a Badassium core.

Output:
The Arc Reactor Tony made in a cave seems to have had an output of something like 3 gigawatts for 15 minutes. All later incarnations of Tony Stark's mini-Arc Reactors have higher outputs.

Tony Stark has built two very large Arc Reacts to power his factories and offices in California, and Stark Tower in New York City. The output of these reactors is not known.
