Why Ion cannons in Star Wars and Stargate recoil?

In a good number of places, but you need special glasses to see them. Sometimes, an ion can be as big as a basket ball, and is called an ion ball, or an ion cannon ball. Such ions are very dangerous but occur rarely.

I was under the impression that an "ion" was just an atom that was stripped of its outer shell electrons or "valence" electrons, and thus either it would be a really big-ass atom or a whole buttload of atoms :)

These big ass atoms look like Skittles. This is the exceptionally huge ions. They're so heavy that even if I were to throw one, I'd recoil. Of course I can't, because they are ions after all.
