FPE - The United Nations Star League

Okay, I've mentioned that humanity in the FPE universe is ruled under the "United Nations Star League". Well, this thread is to explain just what the UNSL is, how it works, what goes on with its military, and social stuff.

The United Nations Star League was founded in 2138, seventy-five years after Zefram Cochrane flew his warp ship, that first brought humanity to the stars. After warp-ships became mass-produced, the wealthier nations that had survived World War III began spreading out among the stars, while Earth continued to rebuild. The Moon, Mars, Venus, Ceres, Callisto, Saturn, Titan, Alpha Centauri A III, Alpha Centauri B II, Sirius VI, and Fomalhaut b were some of mankind's earliest colonies. However, at the time, it seemed that man was alone in the universe. That all changed on March 22, 2078, when First Contact was initiated with the Ferengi.

(Vulcan doesn't exist in the FPE universe. That's why the Ferengi were the race humanity first came into contact with.)

Much to humanity's collective surprise, the Ferengi came not as teachers or conquerors, but as merchants. Technology, weapons, minerals, and other materials were traded between humanity and the Ferengi, and the two races prospered.

At this time, Earth realized it needed to get its act together. The wealthiest of the surviving nations - The United States, Russia, Canada, Brazil, the Euro Alliance, China, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Australia, South Africa, and India signed the Declaration of Alliance in 2087, at the UN Headquarters in New York City. Virtually overnight, more than half of Earth's population was unified. Over the next 50 years, more and more nations joined the Alliance's fold, until on June 27, 2138, the last independent state - Switzerland - joined the Alliance. Focusing its efforts outward now, the Alliance renamed itself the "United Nations Star League" only a few months later.

(The Euro Alliance was formed from the European Union, some time during World War III.)

As humanity spread outward, Contact was established with more alien races. The Bajorans and the Caitians proved to be very friendly. The Tholians proved to be less so. The Tau were friendlier, but a little insistent on everyone joining their cause, something they called the "Greater Good". But the worst First Contact scenario occurred in 2264, with a race known as the Breen. Mysterious and ruthless, the Breen were a race of warriors and slavers as cold as their homeworld. Time and again, war nearly broke out, had it not been for the arrival of a threat in 2345 no one saw coming. The Goa'uld.

A race that had visited Earth millennia ago and posed as the Gods of various cultures. In reality, they were snake-like sentient parasites who had transported humans across space from Earth to various other worlds as worshippers, in order to feed their massive egos. They, along with their genetically-engineered soldiers, the Jaffa, sought to re-conquer mankind. Fortunately, the UNSL had other plans.

Forming an Alliance with the various races it had encountered so far, the UNSL struck at the Goa'uld. It was during this time that the first BattleMechs were created. Giant robotic walkers, the Mechs instilled terror into the Goa'uld and their legions. While this was going on, the knowledge that the Goa'uld were little more than parasites began to spread among not just the humans under Goa'uld rule, but the Jaffa as well. With the System Lords dying at the hands of the Star League, rebel Jaffa launched a revolt. Forming a state called the "Free Jaffa Nation", these Jaffa eventually aided in the overthrow of the System Lords. But not before a great tragedy was inflicted on the galaxy.

Experimenting with a substance known as "trilithium", the System Lord Anubis fired a probe filled with it into Tholia's sun. The shockwave destroyed the system, permanently ending the Tholians as a major power. Thankfully, Anubis was stopped before he could use it on any other worlds, but the damage had been done.

In 2350, the Goa'uld war finally ended, when the remaining few System Lords fled known space. It is currently unknown if they will ever return.

Star League Military.

The Star League has it's military divided as follows: Planetary Defense Forces, MACOs, Blood Ravens & Space Wolves, Starfleet, the SGC, the Asha'man, the Starfighter Corp, and NERV. We'll cover each one now.

Planetary Defense Forces
PDFs for short. These are the militias that each planet in the Star League maintains, mainly to hold the line until the full-fledged military arrives. Depending on the technology level of the planet, a PDF could be equipped with bows, spears, swords, and axes, to gunpowder and laser weapons, all the way up to phaser, bolter, and tetryon weaponry. The former such weapons are mainly found on former Goa'uld worlds.

MACOs
Since the early days of space travel, humanity has relied on these steadfast soldiers to defend ships. Armed with the latest tech, MACOs are also the main ground forces of the Star League, and crew the tanks and battlemechs that are at the front in every major ground engagement.

Blood Ravens & Space Wolves
Human genetic engineering has long been a controversial subject, considered a taboo ever since the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s, in which a group of supermen, lead by Khan Noonien Singh, nearly conquered Earth. However, the Trolloc Wars of the 2360s forced the creation of these two legions of genetically engineered super-soldiers. Having both their strength and intelligence greatly increased, these warriors are then placed in power-armor, and given weapons the MACOs would be envious of. The Blood Ravens and the Space Wolves focus on two different aspects of war. The Space Wolves focus more on direct assaults, while the Blood Ravens focus on intelligence and channelers. The genetic seeds needed for transformation into a Blood Raven or Space Wolf require a Y-chromosome to activate, thus rendering only males capable of becoming these esteemed warriors.

Starfleet
The backbone of the UNSL military. Ever since the formation of the Star League, Starfleet has been there, ready to keep the peace, or counter some hostile threat. Maintaining the space-based forces, Starfleet is the navy of the 24th century.

The SGC
Ever since the mysterious artifacts known as Stargates were discovered, the SGC has been hunting them down, recording them, and seeing where they go. Often, these awesome devices take them to places Starfleet hasn't even dreamed of.

The Asha'man
Channelers. Ever since the discovery of channeling in the 2160s, the Asha'man have been ready at the front lines, ready to command the elements of nature down on humanity's foes. But what is channeling? Channeling is the technique of influencing and directing a mysterious energy field that permeates the Universe. This power is described by those who can channel, no matter the species, as being divided into five powers: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Spirit, although, this is not quite accurate. A better description would be Plasma & Heat & Electricity, H2O, Minerals & Metals & Plants, Gasses, and the Mind & Soul. The classical elements just have a nicer ring to them. Channeling cannot be learned, as the ability to do so is genetic in nature. However, those who can channel can learn to control it. Those who can channel are divided into the Aes Sedai (the civillian branch - coming from an Ancient term meaning "servants of all"), and the Asha'man (the military branch, coming from an Ancient term meaning "guardian"). For reasons unknown, male channelers run a risk of going insane. It is not a great risk, but noticeable. No female channeler has ever been recorded going insane.

The Starfighter Corp
If Starfleet is the Navy, then these guys are the Air Force. Responsible for maintaining most of the sarfighters and other small craft used by the Star League, these brave pilots often rush in where angels fear to tread.

NERV
NERV is unique in that it is not a Star League-exclusive branch. Founded after the Eden Incident of 2358, NERV was established with branches in every local interstellar power. NERV's mission is the deployment and maintenance of the terrifying war machines known as the Evangelions. However, the Vatican Treaty limits the number of Evas an interstellar power can own to 12.

More later...

And yes, FPE is a science fantasy series instead of straight sci-fi. Hell, I mentioned in the OP that it included Warcraft and The Wheel of Time in it. Two distinct fantasy series.

Relations with alien races:

Humanity is not the only race in the galaxy. Many others share the region of the galaxy. Here are the other races, and humanity's relations with them.

NOTE: Population refers to the entire population of that empire, not the homeworlds.

Bajoran Republic
Dominant Species: Bajoran
Capitol World: Bajor
Systems Controlled: 80
Population: 400 billion
Relations with Humanity: Very Good
Form of Government: Federal Republic, slight theocratic leanings.

Ferengi Alliance

Note, if the population numbers seem a little high, well, here are some things you have to consider in the FPE universe:

- When colonizing a new planet, colonists are given fertility drugs, to ensure a stable population on the developing world. This, coupled with replicator technologies, and modern (well, futuristic to us) medicine, causes the newly colonized world's population to soar within a few generations.

- There were many Elder Races, such as the Ancients, Goa'uld, and others, who spread the various younger races across various planets throughout the galaxy. Eventually, the descendants of these unwilling colonists came into contact with the people from their species' homeworlds, and are brought into the larger fold. Usually, being brought into the main empire of the species they belong to occurs peacefully, but conflicts have erupted in the past.

Specialist Legions.

Above the PDFs, but below the MACOs, there lies a region of the Star League military dedicated to fighting in certain environments. Like the PDF forces, these troops tend to come from only one planet in particular. Unlike the PDF forces, they get shipped around the galaxy like the MACOs, fighting in the environment that fits their homes. Some of the more well-known Specialist Legions are the:
Death Korps of Krieg
Catachan Jungle Fighters
Mordian Iron Guard
Valhallan Ice Warriors
Tallarn Desert Raiders
Cadian Shock Troopers
Armageddon Steel Legion
Kanak Volcano Troopers

Others exist, but are smaller, and lack the fame of these groups.

A note about channelers:

Channelers make up roughly 5% of the human population, and upon being identified as one, have to register as one with the government, no matter how weak. Once registered, there are only two possible careers for a channeler. However, these careers carry high esteem, and pay very well, so these more than compensate for the lack of career choices. Channelers are divided into two groups - the Aes Sedai - those who use their powers for civilian purposes - and the Asha'man - those who serve in the military.

It is curious to note that this is the same ratio of Myrddraal to Trollocs. Why this is, is currently unknown.

Protectorate Races:

It is important to note that just because one race is dominant in an interstellar power, that does not mean it is the only race. The United Nations Star League is no exception to this rule, and there are several races that have been given protectorate status by humanity. What this means is that these races rely on humanity for protection, and are considered citizens of the Star League. Some of these races are:

Unas - The original hosts of the Goa'uld.
Image

Ogier - A mostly peaceful race of scholars and architects, although some have been seen as mercenaries, or in the military.
Image

Rigelians - One of the few starfaring races that became a protectorate race of humanity.
Image

Ogryn - Actually, a subspecies of humanity. Brought to cold, high-gravity worlds as prisoners thousands of years ago by the Goa'uld, they've since become large, muscular, and stupid. The only value these abhumans have is in their value as shock troops.
