Chapter One

“So.” Captain Kathryn Janeway began as she put down the coffee mug and faced the younger woman who stood on the opposite side of the office. “Are you positive that he’s the one we want?”

“Completely.” the younger woman – Lieutenant Colonel Misato Katsuragi – replied. “We’ve done every test in the book, and the bio-neural circuitry of Unit-07 will respond to him and him alone. At least, that’s what the Magi supercomputers say.” Misato paused, watching as Janeway picked her coffee up again and took another sip, the look on the older woman’s face just screaming ‘go on’. “And besides, despite his homeworld’s literally medieval level of technology, it IS still a Star League planet, and it’s not like they haven’t had contact with off-worlders before. Last I checked, Ferengi merchants visit this world all the time.”

“Point taken.” Janeway said with a slight chuckle. “Now, how do you propose to break this news to him?”

“The usual way. I’ll mention something about him being needed for a top-secret Star League project, as well as a few things here and there about the Undine threat. Nothing he doesn’t need to know.” Misato replied. At least, nothing he doesn’t need to know about right now. The Undine I can talk about with select Star League citizens, but the Children of Adam – aka the Angels? No way in hell. Not outside Nerv-HQ, at least.

Janeway seemed to accept this plan, and nodded.

“Well then, I see no reason to delay you. You’d better hurry, if you want to make it to your appointment on time.”

“Heh. Right.” Misato said, racing towards the office exit. The automatic door slid open, and she bolted across the bridge towards the turbolift. The turbolift’s doors opened up, and she walked through them into the elevator in question. “Deck Five.” Almost instantly, the turbolift began racing towards its destination. Misato sighed. Okay. She thought. I know that at twenty, he’s technically an adult, but it still doesn’t seem fair. If only people born before the Eden Incident could pilot one of those things. She sighed again. Hell, even the Katos IV negotiations are less of a burden than doing that, considering some of the things he’ll have to fight. Him and the other pilots. She chuckled at that thought. To think that resolving a dispute over a world simultaneously claimed by the Klingon and Tau Empires would be tame compared to something. That wasn’t a thought many people had.

The turbolift doors opened to reveal a hallway indistinguishable from the hundreds of others like it on both the UNSS Voyager and on every other Intrepid-class starship in the United Nations Star League Starfleet. Misato quickly walked out of the turbolift and through the hall to her final destination – a room with the words “TRANSPORTER ROOM 04” written on its doors. Misato took another deep breath, before stepping forward into the room. As she stepped forward, the doors automatically opened, revealing a young man wearing an ensign’s uniform standing at the transporter’s control panel. The man turned to her and smiled.

“All ready to beam down, Colonel?” he asked.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” Misato replied, her hand instinctively reaching into her coat pocket. Feeling her tetryon pistol secure in her hand, she smiled, relieved that she wouldn’t have to rush around looking for it this time. “Alright.” she began. “Energize.”

**************************************************************************************************************

Rand al'Thor brought the axe down onto the block of wood, splitting it in two instantly. As the two halves went flying, Rand paused for a moment to take in the sight of the early autumn afternoon. The leaves, which had until a few days ago been green, now sported a dazzling array of colors – red, gold, orange, brown, and even purple if one knew which plants to look for. These colors, contrasted against the always-green grass and conifers and the sapphire blue sky, made it appear as if a rainbow had exploded onto a painting of a landscape. To think that only a few days ago it had been summer, and now the holiday of Danshu was only a few weeks away. The thought of that brought a slight smile to Rand’s face, as memories of previous Danshu celebrations worked their way up from the depths of his mind. There’d be feasting and drinking, peddlers and Gleemen bringing tales and trinkets from other lands, Ferengi merchants and on-leave Space Wolves bringing their tales and trinkets from other planets, among other merriment.

Rand grabbed a second block of wood, and prepared to bring the axe down again, when a shimmer of light in the corner of his eye caught his attention. He turned around instantly to see the light begin to take a distinctly humanoid shape. A transporter beam? He thought. Has to be either the Ferengi or the Space Wolves. They’re the only ones who visit here like that. Much to his surprise, the person who materialized was neither. Instead, he found himself looking at a strikingly beautiful woman with waist-length raven black hair clad in a red jacket and black dress that didn’t even come halfway down her thighs.

“Rand al’Thor?” the woman asked.

“Uh, yeah, that’s me.” Rand said, verbally stumbling for a few seconds. The woman smiled as she heard him say that. “And you are…?”

“Lieutenant Colonel Misato Katsuragi.” she replied. “I represent a rather… unique… branch of the Star League military.” She paused, and took a few looks around, seeing if anyone nearby was listening in. Despite that not being the case, she looked back at Rand with a slightly worried look on her face. “Maybe we should discuss this somewhere more private. Inside your house, maybe? Can’t be too careful. Ya never know who could be listening.”

“Um, sure.” Rand replied, taking the lead on the path towards his home. “It’s right up this way.”

“Thank you!” Misato said, her smile returning as she began to follow him. “Sorry for interrupting your chores, but this is an urgent matter.”

“No worries.” Rand said. So, a Star League Colonel of all people just beams in, wants to talk to me about something they insist is ‘urgent’, and most of all, wants to talk about it in private? He thought. This day just got much more interesting.

Cool! Can't tell you how awesome it is to see you working on this again.

Heh, Rand al'Thor has no idea just what's he's going to get into does he?

And of course, Gendo's just off screen plotting. XD

Something else to note: You can count the original FPE as simply a rough draft. As far as I'm concerned, THIS is the real FPE.

Well, since Chapter 2 is taking such a long time to get finished, I'll entertain you with the FPE version of the Baneblade, which is a very different beast from the 40K version, even if it looks identical.

Baneblade Heavy Assault Tank
Length: 13.5 meters
Height: 6.3 meters
Width: 8.4 meters
Mass: 316 metric tons
Crew: 10 (Commander, Driver, 3 Gunners, 3 Loaders, Comm-Operator, Engineer)
Power Plant: KPA-47 Dual Muon-Catalyzed Fusion Reactor
Computer Core: Bio-Neural Gel Pack/Isolinear Chip Hybrid
Computer Interface: LCARS Standard
Ground Clearance: 1.2 meters
Max Speed (On Road): 60 kph (courtesy of inertial dampeners)
Max Speed (Off Road): 45 kph (courtesy of inertial dampeners)
Hull: 180 mm Tritanium
Armor: 200 mm Tritanium/Duranium alloy
Deflector Shields: Equipped
Armaments (Standard): 1 Baneblade Cannon, 1 Type-V Phaser Cannon, 1 Autocannon, 2 Type-IV Phaser Cannons, 6 Heavy Bolters
Armaments (Additional): 2 Anti-Air Multiple-Launch Rocket Systems

And now, the FPE version of the Baneblade Cannon. Like the Canon 40K version, this 10-meter-long gun fires meter-long shells. Unlike the 40K version, this version is a railgun, which accelerates slugs of tritanium to Mach 7 using powerful electromagnets. These slugs, rather than being solid tritanium, contain a 10-kg ultritium warhead, which detonates upon impact.

The missiles used in the Anti-Air MLRS are similar to the 21st Century AIM-120 AMRAAM, only being launched from the ground, and whose warheads have been enhanced with small amounts of naquadah.

So tell me, how does this version of the Baneblade sound?

No gaudy hood ornament. No Corinthian leather. Obviously not the LX package.

On the other hand you could probably pick up the holographic decoys (VOY S2E26 “Basic pt1”) or the autoloading photon mortar as after market parts cheaper.

Self replicating ammunition?

From the sounds of it, the Baneblade is the epitome of 24th century technology being built to the Imperium's rugged, overkill specifications.

Makes one wonder just what these things are designed to engage. I mean we're talking about mini-bolo territory here in terms of brute resilience and maybe ordinance, depending on exactly how powerful a type-V phaser cannon is. Tyranid bio-titans maybe? Or possibly Neon Genesis "angels".

Respectfully, Sonofccn

For the FPE Baneblade, I was seeing what I could get by combining Star Trek, Stargate, and Warhammer 40K technologies. The end result was... interesting... to say the least.

As for what the Baneblades were first built for, well, believe it or not, it was Peacekeeping Actions.

"Peacekeeping" in this case, however, means that they were used in the particularly nasty Dynos VIII Conflict, where said planet was caught up in a border dispute between the Klingon and Tau Empires. The Star League was called in as a mediator for that conflict, and brought the Baneblades to show they weren't fucking around. Also, both the Klingons and the Tau were fielding tanks with similar capabilities, so... they would've been necessary anyway.

Another thing: Baneblades also saw heavy use in the Trolloc Wars, which ripped through the Alpha and Beta Quadrants about 12 years before the events of FPE (so, 2367 AD, then). To combat the Trollocs' heavy tanks, Baneblade production went into overdrive, with some sites, like Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards' Ground Division, pumping out as many as a thousand a week.

The Trolloc Wars were probably the most devastating war to engulf the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, requiring the combined forces of the United Nations Star League, Klingon Empire, Free Jaffa Nation, Tau Empire, Breen Confederacy, Cardassian Union, Bajoran Republic, Caitian Confederation, Ferengi Alliance, Tholian Assembly, Lucian Alliance, and several minor power to defeat. Hell, even Ba'al - Last of the System Lords - contributed to driving them off. The Asgard provided material support via a "lend-lease" type of deal, but due to fighting the Replicators at the time, couldn't afford to commit any of their actual forces.

Prior to the Trolloc Wars, Trollocs were seen as a nuisance at most, being first discovered on Rand's homeworld, but encountered on other planets as well, and with nothing more than a medieval level of technology. So, it caught everyone off-guard when they showed up one day with FTL-capable starships (still deciding if warp, transwarp, or hyperspace fits them the best) that could go toe-to-toe with the ships of the major powers.

Peacekeeping operation "Avenging Hammer" is a go...there were no survivors. XD

The Trolloc War sounds hardcore. Not bad for a bunch of dark age Troll-Orc hybrids. So is the Baneblade a mainline tank or is it a super-heavy like it is in Warhammer?

Any chance of seeing what the Klingons or Tau tanks are like?

It was originally a super-heavy, but thanks to the Trolloc Wars, has shifted somewhat closer to a main battle tank. The current version is somewhere between the two.

And oh, don't worry. There'll be PLENTY of Tank Action Goodness. But, to give you an idea of what some of the heavy tanks fielded by the other races are, well....

Klingon Empire:
Kahless-class Heavy Assault Tank
Length: 14.2 meters
Height: 6.1 meters
Width: 7.9 meters
Mass: 320 metric tons

Deflector Shields: Equipped
Armaments (Standard): 1 Super-Heavy Type-III Disruptor Cannon, 6 Disruptor Miniguns, 3 Magnetic Pulse Launchers
Armaments (Additional): 3 Photon Mortars

Tau Empire:
VX-978 Kraken Land Battleship
Length: 12.9 meters
Height: 4.9 meters
Width: 9.2 meters
Mass: 283 metric tons
Crew: 8 (Commander, Driver, 3 Gunners, Load Operator, Comm-Operator, Engineer)
Power Plant: UUV-28 Plasma Core
Computer Core: Isolinear Chip Core
Computer Interface: Fire Caste Standard
Ground Clearance: 0.9 meters (Hover Tank)
Max Speed (Off Road): 68 kph (courtesy of inertial dampeners)
Max Speed (On Road): 68 kph (courtesy of inertial dampeners)
Hull: 150 mm Tritanium
Armor: 150 mm Trinium
Deflector Shields: Equipped
Armaments (Standard): 5 Heavy Railguns, 4 Ion Cannons, 6 Heavy Flamers
Armaments (Additional): 3 Seeker Missile Launchers

More tanks coming later, including Jaffa, Cardassian, Breen, Night Elf, and even Trolloc models!

Yes, those space-faring night elves mentioned by the members of Seele (hell, one of Seele's members was one) in Old FPE will be returning.

The Trolloc Wars also saw the introduction of the Hellfire warheads - weapons whose use is now outlawed in all but the most desperate of circumstances. Hellfire warheads contain three chambers inside their, well, warheads. The first, contains 15 kilograms of protomatter. The second, 15 kilograms of naquadria. The third is empty, and serves as a mixing chamber. When activated, the protomatter and naquadria are forced into the third chamber, and begin mixing. Fractions of a second later, a high-energy tetryon pulse is forced into this volatile concoction, causing it to detonate.

The resulting energies from such an explosion are so intense, that if such a warhead detonated on an M-class planet, there would be little more than vapor left. Of the planet.

A second variety of Hellfire warhead also exists. These nightmarish weapons incorporate trilithium into their warheads, and as such, are used for triggering supernovae.

As you can probably imagine, the use of such weapons without sufficient justification is punishable by death - something all the major powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants have agreed to.

And one more thing. As you can probably guess, the complete schematics of Hellfire warheads are a highly classified secret.

Which means that Gendo Ikari is currently secretly overseeing their production at a facility in the 51 Pegasi system.

Because of course he is.
