Nebula Class 3D

From time-to-time I like to upkeep my art skills (limited as they may be). This time I've decided to build a Nebula Class 3d model from scratch, since I've yet to find a decent one for me to play with :P

So here's how it's coming along so far:

My personal take on adding impulse engines (thanks Nebula Class):

Oh wow, that looks exquisite.

I envy your ability to put together a good looking TNG ship . . . I've never even wanted to try tackling the curves (shudders in horror).

Man, that is nice. I started to make a TIE Bomber once yeeeaaaars ago, before I even knew what a UV Map was, but hey it was fun. These days wrist strain means choosing carefully what I spend my mouse time on, so arting gets left by the wayside mostly.

How do you "play" with them after it's done? Create digital dioramas, or export into game mods? Please don't tell me you have a 3D printer, I don't think I can handle that much envy.

Thanks! I really appreciate that you guys like it.

That's why I took forever to actually start modeling one myself. But then a new and easy way to generate the saucer occurred to me. That lead to quickly building the basic hull, plus a bit of sculpting, vertex manipulations, and procedural mesh distortion. I'll see if I can build a basic GIF of the process.

I do have a 3d-printer (just an old & cheep Printrbot Simple-1401 I've kept tuning) but the mesh is nowhere near manifold, so it'll take quite a bit of work to get it to a printable state (in case you're unfamiliar with 3d-printing, the mesh needs to be mostly closed and not have intersections to properly 'slice' the mesh into a real 3d tool path).

But I typically "play" with the meshes from time to time by creating little scenes or experimenting with VFX. Here's a quick animation I made with a nova class model I found, converted to work with Blender, and improved: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ3tLlD67Fk

And Here's an update on the Nebula's progress. It turns out that there are three variants on the Nebula Class—production model wise; so I've pretty much abandoned following a "blueprint" guide at this point. I'm now trying to identify what makes it unique from the Galaxy class, in any of the thee variants, and then incorporating those into a single 'unified' version of the nebula. For example: the USS Honshu version is a Galaxy-class saucer on a Nebula body, etc...

I've slowly added some more detail to my Nebula-class model over the past couple weeks. Geometry conforming instancing is a pain-and-a-half in Blender, but I eventually got a good workflow going for lifeboat and window detailing. So she's staring to look like a ship.

It looks great, but, uh, if you accept constructive criticism?
It’s missing a warp nacelle... ;-P

Seriously, though, great job!
Looks really nice!

The September pic is missing. :-(
